I don't feel at all smug though (I'm not being sarcastic BTW)
I would. It’s a huge millstone to free from your neck. I’d love to be in the same scenario.

Choices innit. Bigger better houses cost more. Not having kids is a benefit as no catchment area woes. Saying this sending them to private school rather than moving might work out cheaper for some.
As for rates they'll keep going up to 5 I think.

I think it's seeing friends/family struggling with their mortgages/bills etc
Helen and I are very boring; we're not from money; we don't earn big money etc
I think it's the fact that we're boring, lead relatively modest lives, and don't have kids/pets
We've been overpaying for years now, and it's worked wonders
As I said though, I think it's that we feel so "normal" and friends/family are struggling - we've barely told anyone we've actually paid it off because we know people are struggling

Well done DacvE. Not having a noose around your neck is a great thing. I too wouldn't go telling people.

It feels like a major achievement, something that we're really pleased/relieved about, but that we can't celebrate or share with people
Curious feeling
Anyway, you all get the gist

Its nice to see folk not taking the mantle on no debt - bit taboo when most are up to their eyeballs. The silence is all you need to know.

Financially there may have been better decisions to make but knowing your house is completely yours and paid off must be very comforting.
Nicely done!!
Dave!

Mines awkward because I ended up getting almost all of it paid off through my critical illness insurance

Still cheaper than the equivalent fixed

The ideal level is 5 to 6 percent on your savings. Mortgage levels around a few points higher.
Are we nearly there?

yep, though the 8-10% inflation handily wipes out any benefit gained from the interest on your savings...

And of course you're not getting the savings rates passed on by the banks anyway...

My fixed rate ends on October, really need to get something locked in, this is getting silly now
Meanwhile, the ISA still 2% down
This is fine.gif

I got 5.19% fixed for 3 years from the Nationwide this week. Starts last week in September.
You know rates are going up again from Thursday so get a deal Now. There’ll be a few days lag but by Monday, all deals will have risen

I'm really glad we paid the penalty to get out a year early last November. The way things are going we'll have made that money back within the year.

You can cancel a product switch pretty much up to the last day with most lenders.
So better off bagging a rate now and keeping an eye on what happens between now and when your fixed rate ends.
I've had clients change rates 3 or 4 times
