So you're quoting an American road test even though they use lower octane fuel and the cars were in a different tune spec? Even Porsche acknowledge that the F40 was the first production car past 200, and yes it was a production car. The 959 was recorded at 199mph

Well no one else bothered to drive a F40 at VMAX. I don’t think they’re 200 mph capable fwiw, especially as Ferrari were always generous with their stats. Never found any official runs for it or anything, maybe because it was all pre-internet but you’d think there would be something for a cult car. Ferrari just said it does 200 and the world believed it.

Found more stuff sleuthing online, but you can search “Auto Motor und Sport F40 Nardo” to get the review, but it’s in German.

The twin-turbo Ruf CTR was based on the Porsche 911 with a tuned version of Porsche's 3.2 liter flat-six engine bored to 3.4 liters and producing 469 hp, lightened body panels, an integrated roll cage and upgraded suspension and braking systems. In April 1987 it won Road & Track magazine's "World's Fastest Cars" contest to be named "The Fastest Production Car in the World". It did the standing quarter mile in 11.7s and its top speed was measured at 211 mph (340 km/h).In 1988 Auto, Motor und Sport organized a high speed test at Nardò Ring in Italy where the Ruf CTR reached 342 km/h (213 mph), surpassing a Porsche 959's 339 km/h (211 mph), two Ferrari F40s at 321 km/h (199 mph) and a Mercedes AMG 6.0 32V at 288 km/h (179 mph).

Ferrari's F40 was intended to be the fastest car in the world, but it was never timed at over 200 mph outside Italy, and as above, two factory-prepared F40s were both 20 km/h down on the Ruf CTR and Porsche 959.

It’s a Ferrari which only does 200 mph when driven by Ferrari in Italy.

So you're saying a 959 did 211mph when Porsche themselves quote it at 199mph?

If an F40 managed 199mph on the Nardo ring, it is absolutely good for 201mph on a straight road (unless it has run out of revs).

Hard to say on the F40, it was a factory tuned car. FWIW the American spec were actually more powerful to offset their weight, probably more useful for VMAX but it wasn’t factory tuned.
Mclaren F1 went 9 faster on a straight compared to the ring. Should the F40 have thus been faster than what was claimed? It doesn’t add up.

So You’re ok with them quoting 199mph, but 200mph is a ridiculous claim... cool.

Well... I’m sure that if you took those 2 F40’s and drove them in a straight line they would do more than 200. So yeah... a factory prepared F40 will do it. Just not any F40 sold to a member of the public

First 200 mph production car is most likely the RUF CTR and at least that went a decent bit over 200 to not be so ambiguous.

you know best. I doubt Ferrari gave those regular F40s a second glance as they rolled off that line and into the trucks to ship out...

Sport was a trim (that or Komfort). The 959S has bigger turbos and was faster.

Well that generated more discussion than I expected.

I genuinely thought the F40 was remembered for more than just its top speed, maybe not then.

I remember them both, as I was at school at the time & there were two camps. The F40 or the Diablo. I was in the Diablo camp because it could do 202mph over the F40's 201, so it was naturally one better. But I secretly loved the F40 because it looked so awesome (and still does). When you're that age, you don't realise it's OK to like both!
