They want cars to cost more than public transport so people go for that instead, and public transport costs far more in the countryside than London so with the way government works I can see this totally to shit as per usual

First comment sums it up for me, looks great in pics because it comes across as a hot hatch. But in reality it’s a massive family SUV and I’m not sure how many people want to stick KWs on the family bus.

Not seen you mention the Ioniq6 at all Baz. I passed a dark metallic red one with big wheels this week and it looked fantastic, first one I'd seen in the flesh.

3k miles in and its just doing its job without fuss or issue, and I don't get the impression driving impressions on EVs are really sought after here.

It drives in a typically modern way, feels quite taught and controlled up to 7/10ths, then if you push you quickly start to feel the size and weight, the nose pushing on initially (altho still decent front end turn in tbh) and the body control starts to struggle a little. Nothing wayward but it does remind you of its nigh 2T weight if you try to do silly things. Pace is "brisk" (single motor/rwd), enough to make good progress, or get the tail scrabbling out of tight corners.

Negatives are really just the infotainment/hardware - it takes a few seconds to be "ready to drive" but if you want (need) to turn the speed warnings off you have to wait for the screen to fully boot, connect to phone and so forth. That's taking a good 30s, and then its several screens deep to get to the offending setting. Frustrating enough that I've given to leaving speed warning on for short runs, which is one possible reason they did it that way. Its typically fancy gfx too, unnecessary and wastes screen space.

Efficiency wise its generally high 3m/kwh for varied driving, and well into 4m/kwh for town work (averages). I don't do many big motorway runs but its slippery shape does help it, as expected. Still mid 3m/kwh without even trying.

Looks wise, I hated it in pictures when it was announced but in person I find it to be a rather classy looking thing and I quite often find people gawping at it for longer than a simple glance - folk seem genuinely intrigued by it. Not least cos its ruddy massive..

Overall its a bit showey for me, I'd still rather have a nice discreet Niro type vehicle, but I'm rather enjoying the attention it gets tbh, and like I said above, if you can get one with N pace I think it might add another layer to this vehicle (hell, the standard dual motor is probably quite entertaining tbh _ but loses a lot of range over this one).


Overall, enjoyiing it so far, and the gawky boot access not proving too much of a hassle.

ps Civic still around, failed MOT on indicator repeater and cloudy headlamps - getting rectified next week.

How many of you have had 'near misses' with pedestrians? I seem to regularly have people walk out in front of me in places where it's never happened with ICE cars. Supermarket car parks are good one now too, people just walk behind the car when I'm reversing as there is no noise.

Both the model 3 and EX30 have a built in noise when reversing, so not had any issues. I don't think the i3 had a noise, but no incidents.

Yeah, the 'noise' is now a legal requirement on newer cars. Probably wasn't when the i3 came out.

My 66 plate one didn't have pedestrian warning noise and a dickhead drove behind it on a mobility scooter in the dark with no lights on as i was reversing off the drive. Closest I've come to an accident for a long time!

New one does but i don't think it was mandatory until 2018. It's pretty cool, sounds like a 50/60's flying saucer

Our one registered October 2019 doesn't have a noise like a flying saucer

I think I missed (or forgot) that VW is putting €5b into Rivian. Seems quite a bit deal which could benefit both (software on the one hand, buying power on the other). Be interesting to see how that plays out.

The announcement was earlier in the year, but it depends on what they can see they gain. If access to Rivian's software and network architecture means they can save costs elsewhere, then it may work in their favour.

According to what I saw, their in-house software/digital car outfit has lost/spent about the same amount in two years, so it could be a way to shake things up and gain ground quickly.

They’ve also got access to Rimac via Bugatti, VW sold their 55% to Rimac but Porsche still holds 45%

Do you ever have anyone in the back? I sat in one and seem to remember quite a high floor/low seat combination in the rear. Didn't think that would be comfortable for a long journey. Maybe ok for shorter people.
This might be a challenge with EVs in general, with their battery packs under the floor, not just the IONIQ 6.
