It was on the 1 o'clock news on TV to be fair. Couldn't hear the reporter though over the beeping and general noise the farmers were making.

Seems like an ordinary day in London tbh. Just replace tractors with busses and HGVs.

I was looking at the letting my flat out and reading up on the Renters Rights Bill which should be coming into effect next year. It will end Section 21 evictions where a landlord can evict the tenants to take their property back. From a tenant's point of view this is all fabulous, however it quickly made me realise that someone like myself, who is considering letting their property out for a couple of years, it's a big red flag. It would mean that if I let my property and wanted to come back in 24 months, but the tenants were very happy here, then I wouldn't be able to give them a notice. It seems the only way out would be to sell the property.
I'm not against that, I think it's a good thing, it means people will only become landlords if they're genuinely in it for the long haul and want to provide good housing for tenants.

It suits us too because she is a long term tenant and we aren’t trying to make a profit.
It just lets bad tenants basically be able to do whatever they want. It was already a 6 month process to kick a bad tenant out if you were all over the process. Before our current neighbour moved in, the previous renter had the council help them in their legal battle to be kicked out as it meant they didn’t need to house them.
It should be a situation that is fair for all, ensure a safe and secure home from the landlord side. Ensure the renter meets their sensible obligations.
Clearly it’s much harder to make work than it appears on paper or it wouldn’t be such a mess. I wonder how other countries manage things ?

That sounds incredibly unlikely, if you give a 2 year lease then there must be a mechanism to terminate the tenancy at the end of the contract. Just not the current system.

I guess just put them on rolling 6/12 month leases? I’m speaking to my agent this week to see what the craic is, I’m looking to sell up in a couple of years, I’m not entirely sure how it all works next year. Or now, tbh

i was chatting to a mate yesterday about a small house he rents out in newbury. Some of the stories he’s had over the last 13 years renting it out - he is MASSIVELY fussy on who has it these days and the merest hint of a possible red flag and they’re a no.

Perhaps making renting more and more unattractive for landlords so they eventually sell up is the lesser evil. If there's really 30 million dwellings in the UK for 70 million people then there's not really a housing shortage.

because his mortgage is £75 a month and he charges £900 a month.

From speaking to my agent yesterday, they’ve looked at the white paper and the landlord will still have the right to evict to sell or move back in. Whether they actually move out is another matter.
