I fitted PIAA Aero Flex silicon wiper blades and they're fucking marvelous.

Jag saga update

Dropped off for electrical gremlin chase and brake wobble. After a delay waiting for parts, new electrical junction box and discs/pads fitted.
Then one of their valet parkers drives a range rover into it, breaking the front bumper. Further delay while this is sorted.
Then they order the wrong paint for the bumper, further delay.
Finally pick it up after three weeks. Make grumpy noises and get 15% off.

Bad google review later, service manager phones me, offers 50% off the upcoming service. Said I would consider it.
Next day, ABS warning light comes on. I say this is a bit fishy given brake work done. So they do service (including aux drive belt) and repair/replace ABS for free.

Four days after collecting, as I am pulling into the driveway, engine suddenly starts making a rattling/clacking noise, like something is loose. I pop the bonnet in search of answers and notice fibres of something being ejected from the side of the engine. I figure aux drive belt is the culprit - misaligned/tensioner failed/harmonic balancer out/whatever?
I thought about giving up on Jag and going to my local indy but I can only assume this relates to the work on the aux belt. If not, I may be in for a hefty bill of course (or something that gives them wiggle room - new belt on old tensioner causing the latter to fail?).

If the old belt was fine then shouldn't be any issues if they've put a new one on old tensioner etcs unless they haven't fit it correctly, or used wrong belt.

I'd ring them and get them to pick it up.

They are rather good.

I used rainx on the car a few weeks ago - half of it has gone 'off' on the windscreen already. Bit of a waste of time there.

I gingerly drove it back (probably foolishly) during the England match. We'll see what they say today.

I had exactly this, I was having some work done when I was away and my tensioner then failed after about 5 miles. Apparently this is when it’s wrenched over too far (mine was untensioned with a 1/2” drive) and the tensioner then fails quickly as it’s been over-extended the wrong way.

May be worth looking at, also, tensioner do just fail when they have been disturbed so it could also be from natural wear and tear if the schedule called for a belt.

That sounds like it makes sense, time-wise. Still waiting on the report from the garage. A small bit of my brain is panicking that it will be something coincidental, unrelated and expensive, so your words are soothing.

They said the accessory belt had "shredded" which was either a defect with the belt or it not being fitted properly - either way their fault. Will pick the car up on Friday and hopefully that is the end of things.

Bloody hell that's some series of fvck ups on their behalf. I remember being vocally surprised at the vast scale of Saxton when I first went there to view the Defender which I then bought. The chap said the reason they're so successful is that they're basically the only place you can buy a JLR product with decent customer service

Just as well I am moving back to Cambridge, hopefully that will be a less hostile Jag environment.... maybe....

This is by no means my favourite photo of my car so I thought this was the best place for it. First time I've got the entire monochrome fleet (excluding the blue Glaucoma) on the drive at the same time without one being hidden in the garage or out.



I keep thinking about what will replace the CLS but I'm almost tempted to take it to 200k miles, or buy a facelift version so it can go into the centre of Birmingham without paying the £8 low emissions zone fee. I'll definitely miss it when I change it.

Remind me please, what MY is the Mini? Is that a Cooper? (Your stepdaughter) happy with it? Reliable?

She hasn't passed her test yet so it doesn't get used much. It's a 2009 model Cooper 1.6 auto. Reliable? Well I bought it knowing there were a few issues which have been fixed at a sensible cost, though whenever I drive it it throws a check engine light. Reading the codes it's a cam angle sensor which is about £20 and easy to fit, so I'll fix that and see if there's anything else amiss when I drive it next.

Some of the bits of trim inside (the big chrome ring round the centre dial, the handbrake handle) are a bit loose, but things like the frameless windows which drop half an inch on opening a door work fine. So I'd say it's a mixed bag in terms of quality Feels solid though.

There are some very optimistic prices being asked for that generation of Mini. Do check out potential issues with the turbo engine if going for a Cooper S; they look good value though since they're not so popular as a first car. And whenever I've had them as courtesy cars I've loved them.

They have the ability to throw very big bills at you if you don't do your own work on your car, and then, even if you do!

The R53 pre 2006 Cooper S is a much more reliable car driveline wise, but then you have more electrical issues with them.

If I had my time again, as much fun as my R56 S was, especially after it had a BHP bump, I'd have bought something else.

Probably if it was in these times, a Swift Sport 1.4t.
