Over the past week or so the mx5 has occasionally stalled when stopping at junctions, not the end of the world and I'll look at it at some point. Yesterday however it went into overdrive stalling every time I stopped and was very difficult to restart. It smelt very rich too & was giving comedy loud bangs from the exhaust between gear changes.
After doing a bit of research the mx5 forums were united in a dirty throttle body and maybe MAF too. I whipped them off last night and the throttle body had a bit of surface discolouration but nothing too bad, gave it a quick clean though and the cloth was a bit grubby afterwards. The MAF was showing more in the way of dirt and the sensor prongs weren't at all shiny as they should be. A quick squirt of cleaner and they came up bright silver. All reassembled and the car is running spot on now. First time I've cleaned a MAF!

Boring news;
the Polo is now fixed (after having to charge the battery because it didn't start. It's sat for months before without the battery dropping, so it hasn't drained any since parked after going 173 miles without an alternator. It answers the question of how much more was left in it
). Most work was done by my father because he decided he wanted to - in 30°c+*, uv 7, minimal shade
- but bolts that hadn't been touched since it was built twenty years ago coming out with no problems whatsoever certainly made life easier, especially when some were blind and the engine needed to be lowered a tad.

Been working every evening this week on the car.
Started doing the FR wheel bearing and damper, along with turret bearings. Replacing with new bolts and nuts as I encountered them. As I took off the lower arms the rubber split around the balljoint, and as they're probably original anyway I opted to replace both lower arms. Then when I thought I was getting the FR back together I realised I'd left the bump stop out of the damper assembly, so had take that apart again. Then the little allen key screw inside the ARB droplink fittings got knackered so I had to order up new ones of those as well, and mangle the old ones to get them off. The new TRW ARM droplinks are much better BTW. Nuts are a little bigger (less likely to get rounded off) and the allen key fittings are actually torq's, so also less likely to get buggered.
FR is now finished, now just need to finish the left side tonight ready for my OH's 30th tomorrow.

I was in a RC club when I was a yoof- must actually have been around the year 2000 as one of the guys who was a Tamiya nut (as in he basically had a room in his house with every Tamiya car ever made in boxed condition) there rolled up in a brand new GT3 in yellow
I wasn’t that interested in real cars then as a kid so I never asked but I remember him giving rides to loads of people and he drove it daily and seemed to track it every other week. I guess fast Porsche’s weren’t seen as in investment back in those days so he just used it like any other car.
