Yes, I think JL would approve of that one.

I just looked up how much Nick Mason paid for the plate - Octane's article says the car was already wearing it when he bought it. Nice bonus. I also had in mind that he paid about £100k for it but it was actually £37k in 1977 - Octane coyly doesn't give that info. Not a bad purchase.

That era of racing cars doesn't do much for me though. Which is a shame because that's the last era of proper road-usable Le Mans racers, but it's from long enough before I was born that I have no connection to it.

I followed a VW Up GTI this morning, a 71 plate. Took me a while to work out that it was a private reg.

Image

At first I remembered that an X prefix with the post-2001 plate style is not a geographic identifier so it was probably private. Then I looked at the 'UP' part because of the car it was on and realised the Xs either end were probably symmetrical filler, then I finally sussed that G71 was supposed to read 'GTI'.

Is there a more tenuous or crap private plate which is actually possible to work out logically than this?

Bit niche this one but I saw CL59UPS on an A Class over the weekend.

Spaced as CL 59URS signifying "Champions League Spurs"

This is tragic on just about every level imaginable and NOT just because I'm a Gooner

But surely that's IOW (Isle of Wight), in the middle of MK (Milton Keynes) ? M IOW K. They're from the Isle of Wight but now live in MK.

Or work for MK the electrical accessories company. Could be either.

Ooh, catty

At least it's short which is why I bought it.

Pretty limited resale market though. Luckily every potential owner is worth a fortuna. :geek:

Definitely catty!

to be fair, my Elise has the plate E15SEK, which i “think” is supposed to resemble ELISE K. Thankfully it’s far enough from it that i don’t think others think i’m trying it to be that, and i have no intention of changing any spacings or anything to make it worse.

What's on your van? I noticed you have scrubbed out the plate in photos so it must be embarrassing.

I like having a private plate - so much easier when you use a parking app for instance.

Van just has a normal 21 plate - probably not really a concern, but i guess i just see how easy it is to track people down by plates these days (like i did with that cossie) and prefer not to have my daily driver plate online with my name.

I had some tw@t clone the plate on my Mito years ago and they kept using the Dartford crossing. A few seconds drawing over plates is preferable to spending hours on hold on the phone each time it happens!

Although you’ve no way of knowing if they spotted it online or IRL ?
