Maybe Jamie Oliver will ban eBikes. Y'know, because he wants people to eat healthily.

Re: Bicyclist thread
You know what, I replied to a comment made by pegleg (where he wanted the eMTB snd I should have quoted) without putting context around this. I don't think commuter eBikes are a fad, I'm thinking along this lines of the off-road variety, sorry I should have made that clear at the start. I think the on-road ones have quite a bit of justification and if I worked in town I might consider one, it's got to be easier than driving in London. I do not want them banned, but I do think they may end up having to be insured though. We'll just have to watch that case.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 2:28 pmLOL, how aspie are you to consider that we were only discussing fixies with a brake missing?drcarlos wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 2:19 pm
The fixie you referred to in the previous sentence is not a normal cycle (I accept that the lack of a front brake maybe a small detail lost on a non-rider but it's quite important) and cannot be ridden legally on the road, It's already illegal, so therefore banned and the police as noted in the article can confiscate them from riders. That's why they are now fitting brakes. Normal Cycles are not being discussed in this branch only 'illegal' fixies and ebikes. Sorry I'm not a mind reader, I did not know you were referring to normal cycles.
People get killed and injured by bikes and no one is seriously calling for 3rd party insurance, or registration etc. on those.
eBikes are restricted to speeds that are easily achievable by normal people on normal bikes and nothing about eBikes makes them more or less likely to kill or injure a pedestrian.
That a proposal has been put forward by an EU commissioner to have eBikes considered a motorbike means absolutely nothing. Many proposals are put forward, most don't get anywhere.
You have provided zero evidence that eBikes will be a short term fad, nor have you provided any justification for them being outright banned anywhere.
Off-road ones may not get the same grace (ie allowed to be insured) it's those I see that might be a fad if they get classed as motorised and have to be insured. I have no desire for one either. Maybe it's just doom and gloom on my part.

OK, well that makes more sense. I still don't agree with you that that's what will happen, and that's OK.

Bollocks. More caps lock please Dave, it's a slow day here.
Re: Bicyclist thread
I was out last night on my own. I did 23 miles off road in the dark in 3 hours, that's the limit of my light battery on full, but I wanted to do more. I had to carefully plan my route & had to purposly miss sections of trails out so I could get round in time. As I was pedalling, I was thinking about this thread & the fact that if I had that eBike I could do all the trails & more in the same time.
I still enjoyed myself, but reckon I would have had more fun on an eBike, and surely that's the point? Having fun.
Oh, eBikes will be a fad just like full suspension, gears & 27.5" wheels. They're here to stay I'm afraid. There's even a World eBike championship being set up right now.
All off road mind. Where it counts
Also, MX bikes are illegal to ride anywhere but private land, but that hasn't stopped people doing it scince the 50's. They haven't been banned & they never will.

You've lost the edge mate. I can't even remember who lost the edge in Top Gun, but it wasn't good.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 3:13 pm OK, well that makes more sense. I still don't agree with you that that's what will happen, and that's OK.

No that's those gay porn 'documentaries' you like so much. Easy mistaka to maka.
Re: Bicyclist thread
I'll put it into context (i seem to be bad at that). I wondered if the crown estate who own and operate Swinley Forest may ban eBikes being used there as it's fairly busy with adults, children and dogs around.
I've never seen an MX bike there, people aren't stupid enough to ride them there. I do sometimes see the Pikies on them on the common and in the forestry commission land nearer home, despite the warnings of confiscation, there are far less people out there though. I haven't seen an eMTB there yet.
That eMTB championship will probably be run on private land or it will be public and closed off for a day or two. I've seen some pro riders use them but mainly as training aids off road in winter where they help keep a good pace in heavy going, they stick to the regular bikes for normal weather.
Good on the 23 last night that's good going after work, we went out and did one of our usual routes (it was cold too), only 14 miles though but we do it a couple of times a week plus the trip to the trails at the weekend. Might give the 23 loop a go tomorrow unless my new parts arrive then we might try the trails in the dark.

I may pop down and borrow my Dad’s tomorrow, they sound like fun!
Crown Estate won’t be banning anything. You can now cycle around VW lake, and no one ever gets stopped for cycling down the Long Walk.

Left over crest; tightens.
Re: Bicyclist thread
Massively popular in bike hire fleets - as a leveller for people of different fitness/ability to ride together, and (at least for now) for the novelty. Probably the best thing in ages to happen for on-site bike shops at venues like Swinley, and may be keeping a few of them afloat.drcarlos wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 4:01 pmI'll put it into context (i seem to be bad at that). Loads out at FoD the other Saturday morning, some clearly rentals but plenty of privately owned ones too. No conflicts or problems, just people able to go at the sort of pace of a fit/quick rider up the hills. When they caught us up we let them past just like anyone else going at a faster pace.
