I’m not saying people should stop using it. I understand that there are other uses.

However a lot of people who have seen this tweet have read it the same way I have. Including one of the Matrix’s creators and thousands of people in the comments and it’s gross.

It’s all about context. You can tell someone to go home. But you can also use it to be massively racist. And that’s what people who use these phrases rely on. They can pass it off as being innocent to those that don’t know, but it sends a clear message to those “in the know”. Personally, I think given Musk’s current politics and state of mind, I’ve absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he’s dog whistling to the alt-right.

What are the chances that an internet-literate, alt-right-leaning figure with a history of provocative tweets, and just days after calling the Californian lockdown "facist" and threatening to reopen the Tesla factory, tweeted a well-known extremist (misogynistic/alt-right/neo-facist) trope, versus the chances of it being an innocent reference to a 30-year-old film?

To claim it's innocent is directly analogous to defending a major political figure do a straight arm salute on the basis that it was used by many organisations prior to the 1930s.

Years ago I implemented a web filter system that came with a dictionary of offensive terms. I had to look several up, but that didn’t stop them being offensive to those they were aimed at. It’s a ridiculous assertion that something can’t be offensive just because you as an individual needs to look it up.

FFS, I meant to me! And it was ever so slightly sarcastic. As in, if I read a random tweet, like the one here and have no idea as to it's meaning, go google it to see what it means, I am saying, should I then be offended by it?

What point is it you’re trying to make here, [mention]Gavin[/mention]? No one is telling you what to be offended by. But if people are offended by something, then that’s also up to them. There’s lots of things I don’t personally find offensive but understand when others do.

Again, this is the entire point of the dog whistle; make it easily arguable that something is not offensive.

If I had to go looking in order to know why it was offensive should I then, assuming I just thought "Oh Musk talking shite as usual" and just scrolled on, then I would not personally be offended.

I was taking the piss out of people who go out of their way to be offended on behalf of others, and pointing out how bloody complicated the thread had become trying to follow all the random new meanings to words.

I am getting more and more confused the longer this goes on though.

I am talking about people who go looking for offence where none was taken nor intended and who take false umbrage.
