Yep, same here... Haven't followed this thread, so I thought I'd read what all the fuss is about!

That's great news Beany, hope this new place treat you decently and you're finally appreciated for your mad skillz 👍

Life is too short to work for employers who treat you like shit.

Yeah a change to the thread title is probably appropriate @Beany. I didn’t follow it for some time either.

Back to Drugs for a moment...

I pulled my back (unloading the dishwasher - Fucking HARDCORE!!!! ) and I'm in bits. Nurofen takes the edge off a bit but I know I'm 1 "Ill-judged attempt to pick something up" from being bed ridden for a week.

Getting old fucking sucks

It certainly does. My back still hurts a bit which is annoying as piss as it's sitting down that sets it off.

I have introduced a colleague of mine with significant operational responsibilities to the recruitment agent who put me in touch with RealVNC for a job they have going.

Insert evil laugh here.

I have it that solar heater on the shed roof, 45kg ish, arms outstretched and and arched back for balance, sent a WhatsApp to the wife saying “still got it” as she suggested I didn’t do it alone.

Yeah, that night my Left Lat was in spasm and a lot of pain, maybe when you get old you just need a warm-up when doing mundane tasks 😂

Dave!

I'm sure I've mentioned previously that when I've recently been working on the car, I've been throwing myself around theatrically for my neighbours entertainment. On gravel. And I'm not slim or in good shape.

Literally spend the next week finding bruises and limping around like an invalid :D

 You know it...

"What are you doing???"

"Stretching out my Hammies"

"Why"

"Hoovering - why else"

Oh, hilariously, the CEO only found out about my resignation yesterday. You know, a week and a half after the fact.

He's in on Monday, so I'm expecting a grilling. Then he's with the MD in Spain (totally working on company coin, and not on holiday, I'm sure) for the rest of the week.

So the MD is going to have an unpleasant week.

OH WELL, etc.

Also, they've put up some jobs to replace me. both at near minimum wage. Apparently 'linux experience would be advantageous' and a a 23k pay rate (and the requirement fora bachelor's) is what they offer. For someone to run critical decade old Linux and Solaris infrastructure. Suffice to say, I wasn't consulted.

Contextually, the idiot who wrote that job spec suggested I could do contract work at weekends for them to cover the bases, like, you know, thier ability to bill thier upstream suppliers and downstream clients.

,..no. I don't think I will.

They're going to learn some extremely painful lessons this summer.

And. I. Don't. Care.

Don’t be hasty.. they’re clearly in the shit now. As much as it’s nice to cut ties with them, a bit of weekend work on your own terms at a pisstake rate could be handy!

Yeah, but then they won't learn that trying to get min wage staff to run decade old Linux infrastructure (Linux experience would be an advantage, apparently) is a terrible idea.

They're trying to have thier cake and eat it, and they can fuck off with that. I'm not giving them another iota of my personal time, no matter the rate.

I think you’re right to make a clean break Beany, no matter how much money might be on the table.

a. You’re moving Jobs to get a life back and not be on call, 24/7. Why undo this by working 7 days per week

b. Pound to a penny, they’ll want you to coach a junior to be as effective as a seasoned pro without hiring a seasoned pro.

Waaaay more hassle than worth.

It’s just my contractor/mercenary side coming through. I tend to agree though, Dinny.

Fuck ‘em. Onwards!

Ah no I can see the logic mate..,

6 months on a decent day rate in parallel with a salary elsewhere could get you well on your way to a nice car or a deposit on a house etc.

Just think our Beany deserves the ‘other’ benefits of moving…

Balls to all that, move on and never even give them a second thought. You will never have a new career if you get shackled to these sorts of cunts.

I guarantee it'll be both of those.

They won't getting a fucking inch from me.

Well, that's been an interesting day.

Apparently the MD saw my resignation email, saw me mentioning that I'll need to document processes for handover, and that would likely impact performance in BAU tasks. After all, I can't just make time slow down or something and there are only so many hours in the day. And fuck doing this as overtime that I'm already not getting paid for anyway.

He told my line manager no, Beany doesn't need to do a handover, he needs to do these BAU tasks. He'll speak to me about it.

These BAU tasks are what need to be documented, rather than being in my head.

So what the MD wants is for me to run full whack with these tasks, and then for them to stop dead the day I leave because no-one else knows how to do them like I do, and take weeks to get up to even remotely my speed. Assuming that anyone else in the company has time to do it or learn it, whic is unlikely when you run your company on a skeleton staff as a matter of course.

Incredible. Unsurprisingly, my line manager didn't pass that on to me as he realises the implications. But it slipped out today when I walked back into the office and heard him talking about it with someone else....and no, the MD hasn't spoken to me. At all. In any manner.

Also, I got my new laptop today. Dell Vostro, 16 thread Ryzen, 16gb RAM, half terabyte NVME storage - similar to what I have in the office, actually, but the office machine is a Lenovo.

Has a 16:10 screen (which is lovely), a surprising lack of crap installed and.....Windows 11.

Oh my

Actually it's not too bad, but I'll be throwing Linux on there to maintain compatability with toolchains etc. Yes, WSL and all that, but it's not as simple as having it native so you don't have to pass through devices, etc.

No bulky USB drives at home though (all in the office) so that'll be a tomorrow evening job. Or a tomorrow day job if I'm feeling cheeky. I'll likely be throwing Debian or Manjaro on it (I'll probably toss a coin, both are good but 90% of the new job gear runs on Debian....) so I think I'll need to kill Secure Boot or whatever TPM is called this week in Windows land, regardless.

We'll see.
