I had carbon-ceramics on my Q7. Very nice. Weirdly smooth, and didn't do that last-moment grab when coming to a halt, you know where you normally feather off the brakes ?

Nearly 6 months after it happened, I have given up on ever sourcing a replacement front wing for the Jag from the scrappies and booked it in to have the existing panel tapped back into shape. The place I have gone with has a very good reputation and the guy was confident that they could make it look nearly new.

Went to the coast on bikes Saturday,y buddy got his nip this morning 77 in a 60. Expect mine to follow.

Picked the Porsche up, feels excellent, gearshift and damping very tight!

Did you get new one or still the same shitfer?

I think mine needs new oil as its a bit notchy.

It’s got a rose jointed short shifter but the entire back end is new, arms, bushes, top mounts, engine mounts, plus a new clutch and pressure plate.
Had the gearbox oil done at the let service but didn’t notice any difference!

Looks like the 6 is ready for collection tomorrow. It merely needed a new pair of £10 gaskets to stem it’s rather large oil leak. Unfortunately said gaskets were the upper timing chain ones so quite a bit of labour. Had a bunch of other brittle hoses and sensors and gaskets replaced whilst pulled to bits. And a major service.
Seems to be basically regular maintenance on the V8 and they all need new seals at 80,000-100,000 miles and mine went right in the middle of that.

What year is it?

Several of the rubber gaskets on our e46 had turned to hard brittle plastic. Probably because they’re more eco friendly than in the old days, because having them leak oil everywhere and need replacing is a really good thing

2004. I'm not sure if it's due to being eco friendly or just not engineered very well
Oh and the possessed brake pad wear indicator was due to a broken wire, but further up in the loom by the arch...

So with the gearbox service 10 days away and armed with the knowlegde it's low on oil, I thought I'd top it up so I can at least keep driving Maurice rather than park it up and have to slum it in my M140i :p

Armed with some fresh knowledge from the jag forums about jacking/stand points I managed to get it high enough off the ground on all 4 stands in my garage to be able to get under it properly and have a good look. I bought two 1 litre bottles of the correct fluid and was ready to rock.

Clearly it's been leaking ATF from where the stupid cnut that last "serviced" the gearbox used sealant rather than a gasket. Or maybe as well as, who the fuck knows. So that's probably some of why it's low on gearbox oil. They probably filled it cold too, because stupid.

Anyway. There's a drain plug, and a fill plug. All I needed to do was remove the fill plug, pour in oil until it started to dribble out, then plug it up again, start it and warm it up to > 30 degrees C, then take the plug out again and refill it again (while it's running) until once again it starts to dribble out. Job jobbed. It's not hard, save for the fill plug being in a really awkward place



Right above a hot exhaust, and no way of getting a hex socket on it and also the ratchet, without using a universal joint and an extension. So a bit on the fiddly side.

My 8mm hex socket didn't seem to be going in very far, but I gave it a tweek and could not budge it at all. Gave it a good squirt with gunk and got a brush in there to clean it up a bit, and put still couldn't get the hex in very far. Something didn't feel right about that so I didn't try again.



Well there we go. A.N.Other meathead has made a right mess of that - it looks like a sodding rifle barrel. <sigh> There's no way I'm going to risk making that worse, with limited access and tools. Why do people bodge things like this? Surely an 8mm hex socket isn't hard to find.

So it will have to sit now until it goes to the Jag specialist and they can remove it safely. I've ordered a new plug in the mean time just to ensure there is one ready for when it goes in.

I am annoyed.

Good news it's sorted though

£1200! Hopefully no more big bills on it, although it only needed tyres the year before and shouldn’t require anything next year.

Fair enough something gets knackered trying to remove it, but why the FUCK would you put it back in?

No real torque on it so I expect an extractor bit will zip it off.

I guess for the same reason they didn't bother with the proper gasket. If you buy the service kit, you get new everything - even the 11 bolts that hold the pan on are included, both plugs etc. It's £150 ffs.

Access to it is the pisser. One of those "sealed for life" units so they probably didn't care when packaging it.
