Bye bye Theresa
Re: Bye bye Theresa
Fundamentally it splits the four freedoms which EU ideologues insist are indivisible.

Yes, I expected it would get defeated again but actually it doesn't look like she'll actually improve the numbers much from last time.
Question is, when no deal is defeated tomorrow and we ask the commission for an extension and they in turn ask for an additional 1bn a month, whether it will then get passed on the third attempt. Can't say that that is too likely either.

Re: Bye bye Theresa
OK I've changed my mind regarding tonight's result

Re: Bye bye Theresa
People calling for a general election. I mean, seriously. How the hell does that help in any way at all when we have less than two weeks to the 29th. If the government declared an election now they'd have no political mandate to go to Brussels to ask for an extension and/or time to negotiate one amidst preparing for an election even if they took they view they should. We would then leave with no deal by default.
Re: Bye bye Theresa
I have quite the opposite view of Grieve as a result of this. What he said was correct and he said it before the AG said "Bollocks" let alone before the AG published his legal advice. That's despite the politically sensitive nature of the changes.GG. wrote: Tue Mar 12, 2019 11:41 am It does in my opinion make Grieve look a fool (or at least simply acting no more than in his capacity as a politician, not a lawyer) when you juxtapose his "no difference" soundbites to reading a proper legal analysis.
Second, there's a robust QC's opinion also issued before the AG published, here: https://www.daqc.co.uk/2019/03/12/can-t ... be-beaten/

Final paragraph first sentence: "It is crystal clear that the measures do not alter the fundamental legal effect of the backstop, as previously and correctly explained by the Attorney General."
And because it amused me:
ETA: I agree about a general election. It didn't help last time and it certainly won't help when it can't happen until after Brexit day now

Re: Bye bye Theresa
Yep general election is crazy talk, no matter what the outcome there'd be even more mess than we have now. Lib Dem majority would be the only way it could establish a clear position
When tonight's vote fails I hope Labour finally call for a people's vote.... Though I wouldn't put it past the general public to go for a no-deal Brexit.

I'll go to a local one if there is one, but not going to travel to London for it.
I'll do the millennial thing and share a Facebook post instead.

I’m taking my dog to the groomers instead. It looks like a big one though, wonder if the random anti-capitalist cunts will come out and start smashing things up.
How about not having a sig at all?

Would you vote for no deal Broccers? It's going to be second referendum otherwise I think!
Re: Bye bye Theresa
The whole thing, you would think, was meant to end up like this unmitigated disaster. 2 years to plan for the worst case 'no deal' - now, is it true that we would have an issue?speedingfine wrote: Tue Mar 12, 2019 7:33 pm Would you vote for no deal Broccers? I'm not in favour of the country being worse off eventually, initially i could live with.
