If you’re really conspiratorial you might suggest that there was never anything near him and he burst a fake blood capsule in his ear when he ducked down behind the podium.

Classic pro wrestling and he’s in the WWE hall of fame.

If anything the Secret Service/Police seem to have done a piss poor job, seems like some people saw a guy crawling on the roof of a building with a rifle 5 minutes before it happened and told Police. And yeah, 200 foot shot on a target moving their head and clipping the ear - that’s not something you plan for!

Saw a tweet claiming the authorities think it was glass that clipped Trump now, from a teleprompt shattering. More believable than an AK round doing so little damage.

An ex-Army tank commander explained this to me. In actual war, in a firefight, you don't want to kill the enemy. A dead soldier is dead. That's only one person out of the fight. A seriously injured soldier screaming in agony will mean two or three out of the fight as someone needs to tend to them, and even if they don't, the screaming is distracting and pretty bad for morale.

Yeah, it’s long been an accepted strategy to wound not kill as an army full of wounded soldiers is a drain on resources.

In this specific scenario though, you go for centre mass just purely because your more likely to hit it.

Centre mass was partly protected behind the rostrum though.
