Heard a comment on Radio4 last week that made me think of this thread:

The word Decimate now has a meaning that is (almost) the opposite of it's original.

In the military of ancient Rome, decimation (from the Latin decimatio "destruction of a tenth") was a form of military discipline in which every 10th man in a group was executed by members of his cohort.
