Re: Project Binky
Alternator / AC compressor setup is awesome

Re: Project Binky
Love the reference to 'Gromet' and the fears of the internet at the start...

Mind blown at that alternator setup
One of the best yet for me

Re: Project Binky
Stock crank pulley also acts as a harmonic dampener as it's a two piece design. Presumably they'll be building a forged motor so can balance the rotating assembly to the nth degree, so perhaps not an issue.
Re: Project Binky
It's not about balance though it's the torsional resonance of the crankshaft that the two piece pulley damps. Solid pulley might result in some more engine vibration and faster wear on parts depending on where the crank resonance ends up and how offer it runs at that speed.mr_jon wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 12:01 am Stock crank pulley also acts as a harmonic dampener as it's a two piece design. Re: Project Binky
Indeed, I've seen a 3s crank snapped clean in two due to running a solid pulley.
Re: Project Binky
I was surprised at the solid crank pulley but assumed they have a plan. It’s not as simple as balancing to the nth degree to do away with a crank damper though, the damper acts to well, damp, the inherent resonant frequency of the crank, which you can’t remove by balancing.mr_jon wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 12:01 am Stock crank pulley also acts as a harmonic dampener as it's a two piece design. What you can do is hope to move the frequency out of the working range by lightening the components so that where the stock crank might have a resonant frequency at say 6500rpm, if you lighten it enough you might shift that to 9000rpm where unless you’ve got a proper engine you’ll never go anyway.

40-odd minutes just on the flex drive. Impatienters need not apply

Gah. Guess you missed my accurately titled thread here then...

Witness: Striker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low. But he couldn't handle it.
Prosecutor: Buddy couldn't handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?
Witness: Right. Buddy was the bombardier. But it was Striker who couldn't handle it, and he went to pieces.
Prosecutor: *Andy* went to pieces?
Witness: No. Andy was the navigator. He was all right. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued.
Prosecutor: *Howie* came unglued?
Witness: Oh, no. Howie was a rock, the best tailgunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued.
Prosecutor: And he bailed out?
Witness: No. Andy hung tough. Buddy bailed out. How he survived, it was a miracle.
Prosecutor: Then Howie survived?
Witness: No, 'fraid not. We lost Howie the next day.

It’s gone the other way for me now, it’s a fantastic way of showing their fabrication and fitting skills but as a project, it’s run it’s course for me.

remember that this episode isn’t a normal one - it’s purely a machining “extra” episode.V8Granite wrote: Wed Nov 21, 2018 3:22 pm It’s gone the other way for me now, it’s a fantastic way of showing their fabrication and fitting skills but as a project, it’s run it’s course for me.

I didn’t watch more than a few minutes of this one, I watched the previous one and felt the same. It’s starting to be less elegant now. Why use 3 fixings when you can use 20 etc etc.Rich B wrote: Wed Nov 21, 2018 3:24 pmremember that this episode isn’t a normal one - it’s purely a machining “extra” episode.V8Granite wrote: Wed Nov 21, 2018 3:22 pm It’s gone the other way for me now, it’s a fantastic way of showing their fabrication and fitting skills but as a project, it’s run it’s course for me.
