Re: Career Change or Sideline
Hmm, might be time to seriously start considering my options too.
We’ve been crazy busy over the past three months, best first half of the year on record, orders still piling in and everyone’s been working flat out with barebones staffing levels.
Rather than any kind of thanks or rewards for the hard work they’re talking about a compulsory minimum of 12 hours overtime a month.
Not a great time for it though, might have to suck it up, be glad of some job security and see what’s going on in the world next year.

I went from financial analysis to renovating/renting flats, with little more than basic DIY skills behind me. I have proper tradespeople for stuff that's beyond my skill levels, but most of the maintenance stuff is all perfectly do-able. Pay is considerably better than the previous "professional" stuff.
More generally, my advice would be - look primarily to leverage your available capital (and borrowing power) rather than your skillset.

Yes. It's string betting and your raise would be rejected. You raise to 24.DeskJockey wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:57 pmI don't. I mean that he got six on the table and I'm adding 18 on top for a total of 24. Is that DIW?Jimmy Choo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:17 pmYou don't gamble, do you?
Do you mean that you've got 18 years left on your mortgage? I've not started my 24 year mortgage yet.

Rob, were you aware of this? https://www.thebusinessdesk.com/westmid ... of-warwickRobYob wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 11:01 am Similar feelings, Feb this year the client threw all contractors under the IR35 bus, then quickly unthrew us when the changes got delayed. No doubt that bus is right on schedule for February 2021. So I've 7 months to try and commit permicide in Automotive (jobs very thin on the ground and the inudstry is unlikely to be in a good place for a very very long time) or change careers.
Cyber security was something a friend in the police suggested but having no knowledge beyond fixing home IT stuff seems to be daunting.
What I think I'd really like to do is make stuff but I've no shed to work in to make a start on making. Also I don't think it'd make ends meet, with mortgage and ever ravenous Yoblettes.
2020 is just a fucking shit show.

Different line of work, but in my world there’s still outside-IR35 roles around. I interviewed for one a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah Lotus are one of the few automotive Co's recruiting at the moment. Very competitive though with JLR letting go huge numbers of contractors.Jobbo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 9:35 am Rob, were you aware of this? https://www.thebusinessdesk.com/westmid ... of-warwick

No. You're still getting kicked out of the casino. "I'll raise you to 24." is the phrase you want.DeskJockey wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:47 pmFine.Jimmy Choo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 7:21 pmYes. Harsh. Why I only played blackjack when I went to Vegas. Only game I thought I understood (and did walk away with $100ish more than I started with after I'd paid for the room).Jimmy Choo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 3:30 pmNo. You're still getting kicked out of the casino. Edit: stayed three nights in Vegas as it was a cheap place to stay and use as a base when exploring the surrounding areas.

I’m going to hijack this thread a bit.
My work wants my to do a network training course but I’m not sure what I’m looking for. Anybody got any recommendations?

What sort of network kit does your work use? And what’s your role in supporting it?
Or is it just a general technical understanding about how networks work that they want you to get?
Cheers,
Mike.

You've reminded me of all the politely worded 'opportunities' we get to work extra time for our clients for no financial benefit. On top of the extra time I already work for my clients for no financial benefit (to me).integrale_evo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 5:27 pm Rather than any kind of thanks or rewards for the hard work they’re talking about a compulsory minimum of 12 hours overtime a month

Ascender A more general understanding.
When I started with the company we were very small and I defaulted to looking after the equipment because I’m “good with computers” . We’re much larger now and our requirements are starting to outstrip my knowledge/ability to google.
Need something that will give me a more professional knowledge base to build from as we keep growing.

Cisco CCNA is not a bad foundational course. Obviously built around their way and products, but the principles are universal.ZedLeg wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:13 am @Ascender A more general understanding.

Yeah, I had looked at that one but I wasn’t sure if it would be general enough. Thanks.
