Interesting to see that pic, I didn’t actually appreciate how many design cues had carried over, the little roof slope, the Front to back ridge under the side windows- it’s actually made me like it a bit more seeing it compared like that. It is quite big though, but then it was never going to be small with all the crash structures needed for modern vehicles

Re: 2020 LR Defender
Be interesting to see the whole range - it seems that the evoque 5 door, discovery sport, defender 110 and the velar are all pretty much the same size? Which is only a tiny bit smaller than the discovery and Range Rover. Do they just steal sales from each other with everyone just getting the newest one?
Re: 2020 LR Defender
A side by side view is more telling as a Defender is very narrow.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
It doesn’t look that much bigger, looks taller but the new Defender appears to be in its lifted position. If it is only 30 cm longer then that’s pretty amazing for a 7 seat car with crumple zones.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: 2020 LR Defender
So without the spare wheel on the back it’s the same length as a W164 ML which isn’t bad at all.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
Seeing them head-on, side by side the difference doesn't look as bad. The new one is only marginally wider and longer and doesn't seem to be as tall as the old one unless its ride height is increased for use in water.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
The rear overhang of the new Defender appears to be shorter too (ignoring the wheel) and the front over hang isn’t that much larger. Interior space is massively improved on the new one.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
When sitting in a new one it feels like a Defender, in a good way, you have elbow room and more practicality for example but the shape is unmistakeable.jamcg wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 1:12 pmInteresting to see that pic, I didn’t actually appreciate how many design cues had carried over, the little roof slope, the Front to back ridge under the side windows- it’s actually made me like it a bit more seeing it compared like that. Perhaps it's just me, but I think it's the wheels that make it look much 'bigger'. I'm too crap with photoshop to shrink 'em down, anyone care to try?

Re: 2020 LR Defender
That’s because the wheels and tyre pairings are larger on the new Defender, largest ones LR have ever fit to a series production car

Yeah, that doesn't shock me in all fairness. I'm quite sure it impacts the 'visual scaling' in the head, though.Orange Cola wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 10:17 pmThat’s because the wheels and tyre pairings are larger on the new Defender, largest ones LR have ever fit to a series production car
Re: 2020 LR Defender
For decades people have complained about the lack of space in a Defender and how cramped they are, shock horror they've made it bigger. The current Fiesta is bigger than the MK11 Granada.
Re: 2020 LR Defender
What? The wheels on the new Defender aren’t bigger than the factory options ok the Range Rover.Orange Cola wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 10:17 pmThat’s because the wheels and tyre pairings are larger on the new Defender, largest ones LR have ever fit to a series production car
Re: 2020 LR Defender
Maybe the overall diameter including tyre ?
An off road tyre needs a deformable sidewall and you won’t get that with a low (in comparison) profile.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
Hmm, seem to be pretty much the exact same diameter as fitted to the 21” option on the Range Rover; 31” total diameter. If it’s a few thousandths bigger on the Defender then your statement sounds like fanboy hyperbole.
Plenty of far bigger tyre diameters being run on old Defenders anyway. They start at 31”...
Edited to correct maths brain fart; I’d only added the tyre sidewall height once, not twice, to get the total diameter.

Re: 2020 LR Defender
I’ve just specced one to £65k being realistic with the options
I’m surprised with all the odd road packs and electronic diffs - is the car just a poncy Chelsea tractor without them or are they just for people planning on taking their car to a mud pit?
