You guys have it easy if that’s all the bad luck you’ve had today!
I’d happily have both my cars written off and the flat set on fire compared to the shit I went through
How about not having a sig at all?

Re: Your fleet running reports
Compact update. I’ve not been underneath it yet but after giving it a good wash last night I’m feeling generally optimistic. There’s some rust on the nsf corner where a very minor ding has been very crudely DIY’d but those panels easily unbolt so not a big deal to change them. Apart from that there is NO visible rust on the body at all. It’s better than my E46 was ! Engine starts and idles very nicely. Not driven it yet though.
Things that definitely need fixing so far:
Air intake hose is split
Driver’s window not working (motor is running though, so hopefully something simple)
Wiper blades are split & perished
Rear wiper not working at all (I’ll just remove the whole thing)
osr sits low, almost certainly a broken rear spring
Handbrake not working
Saggy roof lining
All of the warning lights on the dash are on ! I’ll reset them and see which ones come back.
It’s all pretty minor stuff really. As long as it’s not rotten underneath I think it’ll be a good car. And it came with three quarters of a tank of fuel ! That’s £50 right there. All four tyres are new and it apparently had a new water pump & brakes all round before being laid up. It feels like someone was trying to get it fixed up but ran out of money/time/inclination.
I’ve been researching all the upgrades I need (/want) and it looks like the simplest thing to do is buy a 2.8 Z3 and transfer the entire running gear. Bigger engine, bigger brakes, wider track and something I didn’t know - they came with LSD as standard and the later models had a Torsen diff. I've always wanted to try one of those. A cosmetically tatty 2.8 is <£2k. That lot in a slightly lightened E36 shell should make an excellent little toy

Re: Your fleet running reports
Hmm, had no idea any z3s other than the M had an lsd.
Will be on the lookout for a rusty local one
I've still got my old blue one which I'm slowly pulling to bits if you want any spare odds and ends.
Despite being a hatch the rear window is at enough of an angle that it doesn't get dirty when driving, I've left my wiper on because it's handy when reversing down the drive on misty mornings, but in normal driving it's not needed at all.
My headlining has also started sagging, I've been on the lookout for a black sport headlining set for ages with no luck. Might just retrim it myself, but then I've still got the grey handles visors and lights.
And yes, my one has way less rust than our year newer e46, although I did knock one of the jack pads off on a curb which revealed a tiny hole.

Re: Your fleet running reports
My rear wiper motor is broken - whoever thought running the wiper fluid right through the middle of the assembly was not thinking 20yrs ahead ! It’s got stuck at about 10 o’clock. Maybe it’ll free up if I strip it all down. Or I can ditch it and save some weight. This is, after all, a RACE CAR.
I was surprised about the Z3 diff but I’ve read it in a few places so it might actually be true. Only the 2.8 & 3.0 models. They have a wider rear track too, the arms will be wrong for a standard Compact but if I’m ultimately building a wide arch rally-style car it’s exactly what I need.
Headlining is fully sagged. I’ll pull it out and see if I can glue it back in place. Otherwise I guess I can just ditch the fabric and paint the card black ? Because RACE CAR.

New Pagid pads on the rears for £70. Car now drivable again. Tyres still legal after trackday. Sorted.
Left over crest; tightens.
Re: Your fleet running reports
Although the mx5 had been serviced on a regular basis before I owned it I decided to have the oils changed so that I have a reference point I can service it from in the future. As with many cars now there is no service book with the Mazda so it's sometimes difficult to know what services have been done and at what intervals. To prepare I bought a genuine Mazda oil filter and ordered the engine, gearbox and diff oil from Opie Oils.
My mate (Chris) said he'd do it at his workshop to save me crawling around on our driveway so I drove there this morning. As usual he had some tasty classic cars cluttering up the garage.
That's a 240z under the cover and the reason I've blanked out the Escort's reg plate is that someone applied for the log book for it. Chris got a letter from the DVLA asking if he'd sold the car as someone other than the owner had applied for the log book, cheeky git.
Back to the mx5. The oil filter is a bit of a sod to get to on the mx5 but everything else went smoothly, barely a trace of anything metallic on the magnetic gearbox and diff plugs. After the service was completed a road test was obviously required and Chris disappeared for around 15 minutes for his first ever experience in an mx5 of any kind. He returned praising the gearbox and the "lovely" power delivery. That's pretty much all the car needs for now but I keep having my head turned by carbon fibre "duck tail" spoilers

Transit update:
I removed the a shelf unit from the back to make some more room, and because I was just filling it up with crap. It's made a fair difference to the space available, and I also discovered another battery in the grey box, which makes a total of three This one's a leisure battery and looks like it's there for the invertor.
Loadsa room:
Because it's not used all the time I've found the batteries sometimes go flat - there's two under the drivers seat, one is only used to start the engine, and the other one does the stereo, central locking, and so on. I can't plug it in to a CTEK or anything as it has to be parked on the street, so decided to fit a small solar panel to the roof to keep them topped up. We'll see how effective it is, but so far so good. I bought a kit from Amazon which included a thin flexible solar panel, a controller, and enough cable to connect it all. The solar panel is just stuck to the roof with some 3M foam tape, and I used an existing hole in the roof from a mystery aerial to get the cables into the back of the van. The controller is attached to the bulkhead with some rivnuts (these are great) and a few cable ties to tidy it all up. The van has so far failed to burn to the ground, which is nice
The controller can charge two batteries at once:
BMW M135i:
It displayed some sort of chassis warning when I started it the other day, it told me to drive cautiously and the ride was bloody terrible so something to do with the adaptive dampers. After a few miles I pulled over, turned the car off and on again and it went away. Bit of Googling suggestes it might be a loose connector or some sort of speed sensor, but so far its not returned.
I bought a genuine 116d badge for it on eBay for £8.
Spazda:
Nothing has happened, again.

Re: Your fleet running reports
Booked my car in for EXTREME rust protection at the end of the month. It’s so dirty under the chassis that I don’t think it’s possible for me to clean it thoroughly without putting it on a proper lift and having a steam cleaner to get all the existing waxoyl off. Also they’ll remove the grommets and get treatment into the bulkheads and doors.
Still debating wrapping the roof in silver, seen a lot of two tone Defenders about and I think the lighter colours with a darker roof look good but unsure about doing it the opposite way round. I’ve found this on the internet which is what I’m going for but I’m still undecided as to whether it looks any good?
I’ve got a silver bumper and steering guard which should tie the silver roof in more.

I have van envy.
Proper 4x4 van. Not the shonky unreliable LR bollocks.
Ideally a Sprinter.

Shit couple of weeks for cars, after being very careful not to scrape the black wheels on the leased SEAT for the last 3 years, the wife has gone and scraped one last week.
