Spain Epic Drives
Spain Epic Drives
Who has toured from Santander or Bilbao south and back?
Re: Spain Epic Drives
Yeah, last September I drove down to Portsmouth, got the Ferry to Santander, then went to the Picos De Europa, into Portugal, then Spain. Back up through the Pyrenees, Andorra then up through France/Belgium/Holland.
You thinking of taking the Boxster?
Roughly the route I took:

Cheers Marv. Yes. Time is not on our side as only have 10 days 2 of which are on the ferry to Bilbao and back (she doesnt want to be driving all the way where I am happy to).
Theres some fantastic roads to explore more than I realised. Thinking going down to Madrid then onto Benidorm area to see my mates and back up a different route. Around Madrid is apparently really good.

I went about ten years ago. Arrived Bilbao. Picos de Europa a must IMO. Empty roads, stunning scenery. Went along the coast to Portugal and back rather than Marv's epic.
Boat was a bit low rent (think we went p&o which is now defunct) book a nice room as there and back it's quite a long time to be in a small space!

Thanks Chris. The more I look into it you could easily spend a month touring around, not a problem for me but Nic has a proper job

There’s loads of great roads when you head inland from there - San Sebastian is my chosen start point.
The N-260 is my all time favourite - three days easy going with a passenger on board and you’ll be in Barcelona. I normally do it in a day heading into the hills at 5.30am, but you’re passenger will have had enough by lunchtime.
For less twisty ‘passenger friendly’ roads, taking the main autoroute over to Santiago from Santander has great views and a lack of speed checks - I have fond memories doing that in a Boxster with the roof down, rarely going below about 120mph.

Thanks lads. You delivered. I'll post our route when I decide and look for tips. I'm looking forward to it.

Down at the southern end, try the road between Marbella and Ronda.
Left over crest; tightens.

I’ve done quite of bit of driving around Europe, in a variety of cars, and I’d always go to the Pyrenees over the Alps.
There are roads to suit every car type, and even in the middle of the summer, 6am - 9am gives you the best driving you’ll probably ever experience.

View from a campsite in the Picos we found. Would love to go back in the Caterham one day, piston failed two weeks before we went (admittedly better than during!)

Didn't realise there's a campsite at Riaño. The scenery around there is breathtakingspeedingfine wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 10:37 am

Having thoughts of going there on my motorbike next year.
