Golden Globes 2020
Re: Golden Globes 2020
Bollocks, people are fine with people telling jokes that are controversial. What people don’t have time for is middle aged millionaire comedians using their huge platform to complain about how you can’t joke about anything anymore while doing the contrary.
Gervais told a dead paedo joke at a corporate gig he keeps getting invited back to. It doesn’t sound like he’s being stifled too much.
I personally find his humour unnecessarily cruel and mean spirited, he also seems quite thin skinned when people don’t agree with him. I find it easy enough to not watch his stuff though.

Maybe I've missed something, but AFAIK Gervais has always consistently said that you can joke about anything and it's up to you as the joke-teller to decide whether you care if people are offended.

Re: Golden Globes 2020
I thought his Caitlyn Jenner driving gag was brilliant and ironically he was getting $hit about it when he was specifically making a (sexist) joke about women after calling out the good things she'd done - I think its a very well written, short joke which is quite clever.I'm at a loss as well. It's either that or his Bruce Jenner gag.
I think the issue is that he walks a very fine line with these sorts of things, and in a world where people look to find offence anywhere they can find it, some of his gags will be considered as being over the line.
Even his standup stuff (which I think isn't his strongest suit) covers pretty much everyone and every thing. And I do believe in what he says, that just because you can laugh at a "bad thing", it doesn't make you a bad person. I was brought up to respect everybody, their lifestyle choices and their opinions.
And of course, as a middle-aged white man, I think this forum is about the only place I could say that now without copping a load of grief. Just because. The internet and social media seems to be getting more toxic by the day and people can't just post something without it being over-analysed in an attempt to find a negative angle with which to beat the person over the head with.
Cheers,
Mike.

Well I like him and enjoy it when he offends people who don't like him.
Cheers.

Sorry phrased it poorly, was thinking about this quote.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 2:22 pm Maybe I've missed something, but AFAIK Gervais has always consistently said that you can joke about anything and it's up to you as the joke-teller to decide whether you care if people are offended.
It’s hilarious that he’s being praised for roasting the Hollywood elite he’s part of as well

You couldn't very well send up a non-celebrity to present the awards and take the piss out of them all ... I'm sure he's fully aware of the irony.
I don't find his stuff super funny, it's more clever and raises a smirk than really getting me laughing. It's great to see all those A-listers squirming though!

Re: Golden Globes 2020
I think that backs up what I'm saying. I don't recall him ever complaining that "you can't make jokes about anything", just the opposite, in fact. For example:ZedLeg wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 2:48 pmSorry phrased it poorly, was thinking about this quote.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2020 2:22 pm Maybe I've missed something, but AFAIK Gervais has always consistently said that you can joke about anything and it's up to you as the joke-teller to decide whether you care if people are offended.

I feel like Frankie Boyle says something similar.
Re: Golden Globes 2020
Well I’m happy that comedians who split opinions still have the courage to get out there and tell jokes. If they filter everything to appease everyone they’ll end up with kids jokes...
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Golden Globes 2020
I always liked this from him.
I do find most of his comedies funny, and used to really like his old XFM shows. Most of his shows have been great as well. Each to their own and all that..

Re: Golden Globes 2020
I thought when Boyle started he was a bit more clever with what he wrote, but as he got more popular he seemed to get lazier and now just says any old stuff to shock.
Cheers,

I don't like Gervais' stand up so tend to avoid that, but most of his series are good. Derek has some scenes which in themselves might be offensive, but the whole thing is really quite tastefully done I thought, and I'm not ashamed to say it made me cry a few times.
Re: Golden Globes 2020
Not talking about his content, more his views about everything being on the table for making jokes.
Re: Golden Globes 2020
Frankie Boyle was fucking great on mock the week, but it just seems everything else he’s ever done is 30 minutes of jokes about abusing pain killers...
Re: Golden Globes 2020
'ooh he's so outspoken'
Thank you Stewart Lee
".. Ricky Gervais has managed to monetise this notion spectacularly, saying the things that he is apparently not allowed to say, on a variety of global media platforms, for millions of dollars, with the full co-operation and approval of the legal representatives of the institutions on which, and about which, he says the things he is not allowed to say, his functionally adequate standup act having been overpromoted worldwide off the back of his pitch-perfect contribution to the ground"

Re: Golden Globes 2020
I think we’re back to the subject of people believing what stand-up comedians are saying at face value when it’s a joke. Ironically, Stewart Lee did a whole sketch on that.
*Ironic not because Stewart Lee appears to be being hypocritical but because someone is taking his words at face value
