eBay 996 build thread
Re: eBay 996 build thread
Happy days
Do you have to run it in or can you rag straight away?

The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

Yeah that's around what I'd expect. Hopefully all plain sailing from here, and you've got to keep it for a while now to get the value out of it
Re: eBay 996 build thread
Rev doesn't believe in running an engine in. He'll be bouncing it off the limiter out of the garage car park .
An absolute unit
Re: eBay 996 build thread
At least if it blows up there, it won't need towing back. Can just push it the 100yds.
Sounds like a pretty good thing overall - you've still basically paid (all in) bottom of the market prices, but it sounds like now the car should be just be 'servicing and fuel' for a good few years.

I don't believe in gentle running in, I do believe in letting the engine and oil warm up. Besides, it doesn't need any running in.

Re: eBay 996 build thread
While it's still a reasonable price, it's still 50% over what you were expecting (or hoping). Why do we (me included) accept this practice from garages?
I can only imagine the face my customers would pull if the final bill was 50% more than I'd led them to believe!
Anyway, you can enjoy it now. My Type R (which was a similar 'bargain purchase' story to yours) gave years of hard service after the rebuild before it destroyed itself, but by then it was worth nothing anyway.

The 3k figure was always the one in mind, wasn't it.

Ah.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 10:19 pmExactly my thinking, plus what OC said. It’ll be fixed for less than £2k. On a car where a set of tyres is £750, it’s nothing really.
Oh well, it's only money.
Re: eBay 996 build thread
Bottom of market for a 996 must have a similar expectation of a blow up and rebuild in a similar timescale to Rev's car. I'd definitely have been more confident in my Boxster if it had had a strip down and rebuild in my care.
Re: eBay 996 build thread
For 30-odd hours work, including taking the engine out, a new head and chains etc, it seems alright. Especially if you trust them.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2019 9:07 pm OK, final bill is in. £3200. I don’t think that’s bad at all for everything they’ve done. A little more than I’d hoped but not far off and they’ve done a comprehensive job.
And now you’ve got a car, with a known good engine, that’s been checked over by a specialist who thinks it all looks good.

Re: eBay 996 build thread
The bill is fine, the expectation was all me being a bit naive and nothing to do with the garage. They were 100% spot on in every way and have done loads of little bits that they haven’t charged for (for example refitting bits of trim that weren’t perfect and painting the wheel bolts etc). If you have a Porsche, consider using them because they’re excellent.

Just got back from a good ragging round the back roads of Cheshire. Used half a tank of juice in 80 miles with a massive grin on my face. Damn, it’s so good (albeit nowhere near as fast as a Turbo S, unsurprisingly).
