Italian Car Hire lottery

Post by NotoriousREV »

Booked: Mazda CX-3 or similar
Got: Ford C-Max

It’s got a big boot. The air conditioning works. Other than that it’s a car.

I had an upgrade forced upon me recently. If I bought extra insurance, which I never normally do, I was offered an upgrade from the Mondeo Estate that I was quite happy with, to an A6 Avant 45 TDi.

Blimey - a very, very impressive car. And I had a 3k km trip to manage, so it was most welcome.

The sat nav occasionally shouts “Caution!” for no apparent reason.

German car hire lottery coming up. I've booked a 1-Series "or similar".

On a recent trip I had to ask the very nice lass behind the counter if car hire companies actually know what "or similar" actually means

As long as it has the same number of door and seats it’s similar

On our recent holiday I totally bamboozled the woman at the hire desk.

Had booked a "Seat Leon SW or similar". Upon arrival she said she was "upgrading" me to a new 1.0 Astra estate as the Seat was knocking on a bit. I enquired how old/how many miles were on the Seat. 18mo old an 42k.

"I'll take the Seat then please." She seemed totally puzzled as to why I would. Even explaining that the Seat had a bigger engine and Opel seats usually cripple my back, and she still looked at me blankly.

Yeah it was a little tired looking but WGAF?

Well that was a turn-up for the books - a BMW 218 droptop!! All of us loving it - despite the absence of an engine - that we now "have to have" a convertible for the Dubai winter (more my idea than hers tbh) and I'm looking at an '08 TT Roadster 2.0 TFSi on Monday for the lass.

Pram chassis should fit in the back, Isofix on the passenger seat for the nipper and no space for me so it's purely hers.

Both stupidly excited about something so illogical and impractical but might just be a winner for her day-to-day. The other cars can do family duty.

Has one child, goes out and buys a massive 4x4.

Wait, you're doing this backwards aren't you?

My M3 might as well be a 2 seater at the moment - I have the seats down and bikes in the back most days and the boys isofix seat goes in the front.

So long as you have a practical big car for proper overnight outings (which require epic amounts of stuff) then you can get away with something like a TT for most normal days so long as it fits the pushchair. It’ll need to have an airbag switch though.

Yep exactly that Rich. Isofix in the front seat, airbag switch and pram space in boot already verified.

Pretty much our set up but we have a roof.

If it’s me and 1 child we take the Defender.

If it’s her and 1 child she takes the TT.

As a family we take the ML and hopefully in the spring, the 500e.

The TT boot is surprisingly large aswell, I have even popped The dog in their before.

Dave!
