Re: eBay 996 build thread
I know where Foz is coming from, you’ll spend £25k for a garage to build you a slightly scruffy V8 911 that’s done 130k miles and may always have issues to contend with, when for that money you could just buy a fairly recent Mustang/Camaro that you can bolt go faster bits to at home or a 997.

All of which will be slower and/or handle worse. A 997 could be just as unreliable as my 130k 996.Rich B wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 8:43 pm I know where Foz is coming from, you’ll spend £25k for a garage to build you a slightly scruffy V8 911 that’s done 130k miles and may always have issues to contend with, when for that money you could just buy a fairly recent Mustang/Camaro that you can bolt go faster bits to at home or a 997.

Mines had 25k spent on it in the last 4 years. And still costs me money. As yours was a cheap car, keep it that way, otherwise the bargain will cease to be that.
The car makes absolute sense if you keep it sub 10k, as I all well know they can swallow money like you wouldn’t believe

Re: eBay 996 build thread
Yep if you’re gonna be £25k deep to stick a V8 in a 911 you should just go buy something with a V8 already in it.
How about not having a sig at all?

Re: eBay 996 build thread
Oh yes..
Don’t have the invoices in front me but the reason for buying was:
Engine 12k
Rads & condensers
Clutch
Exhaust back boxes
I went through the invoices and previous owner had spent just under 20 grand in the 5 years he owned it.
I mean it’s pretty much sorted yeah
Since I got it:
Suspension refresh 2k- coffin arms Bilstein B8’s and various other drop links, arms and shit.
Wheel refurb and Michelin tyres 1k
Coils, plugs, MAF and a full service 1.3k
All Breaks inc caliper refurb 1.5k
It’s only done 66k

Bit of a gap though, bottom end V8 Mustangs are £28k and more like £32k+ for something which doesn’t have a questionable past, supercharger kits from somewhere reputable are £15k. That’s a big gap from the £8008 spent on the 911 so far.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 9:01 pmAll of which will be slower and/or handle worse. Re: eBay 996 build thread
Interesting spec. It's difficult making an LS rev that high, reliably. The rockers, springs and lifters will be given some grief! Presumably it'll be solid lifters, hollow valves, dual springs etc? With the right cam in a standard LS3 you can move the power curve further up, so the delivery is less like the traditional lazy V8.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:55 pm It’s probably £15k minimum. I’d want to do it properly so crate engine rather than scrapyard, proper ECU etc.
What I want is a de-stroked LS3, which is the 6.2 block with the crank from the 4.8 Vortec for 5.6 litres and (with appropriate parts) 600+bhp and 9000rpm. Not cheap, but not as expensive as it sounds.
600+BHP is LS7 with cam territory - however it's probably no cheaper than what you have planned. Or you could try an LSX376 with a couple turbos.... Or an LSX454
For a smaller budget, I'd be going for a crate LS3 (£6.4k) and cam/drivetrain (£1-2k) for 530bhp/460 lbf-ft

I’d be solid roller cam, CNC heads with appropriate valves etc for that power. I’d probably limit it to nearer 8k but build for 9.mikeyb wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2019 8:15 amInteresting spec. Should be a nice build. If you're stuck for someome to map it, I know of a guy in Oz who is really good - he will map it remotely using a rolling road near Chester.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2019 8:41 amI’d be solid roller cam, CNC heads with appropriate valves etc for that power.
