Re: Randomness
A long time ago, when I was about 19, I worked on a farm. I was there mainly to pick spuds, but I also helped out with the dairy herd. One early morning we were bringing the herd in for milking. If you've never been around cows, when they're ready for milking, they want to be milked and quickly; they gather at the gate of the field waiting to be let out and will run to the milking parlour as soon as the way is opened.
On this occasion, the field was on the opposite side of the road to the farm. The road the farm was on basically only has farms, a handful of cottages, a tiny primary school and a church. It forms a sort of loop, with both ends of our lane ending at the same main road, and our farm was about halfway along it i.e. it didn't matter which way you went along the lane, you ended up pretty much in the same place, in roughly the same amount of time.
So, we let the cows across the road to go to the parlour, and after the herd start crossing, a bloke in a Range Rover turns up and starts laying on the horn, so the herdsman goes over to ask him not to as it could spook the cows. The guy is apoplectic with rage, wants us to stop the cows so he can drive through because "I'm a surgeon and need to get to work!". The herdsman, Cyril, being a cantankerous old twat at the best of times, told him that if wanted to throw himself in front of 100 head of cattle, weighing half a tonne each, desperate to be milked, he could go ahead, but we'd be letting them cross. Funnily enough, he chose, eventually, after some more ranting, to just go the other way. Cunt.
