It probably says something about us as a species that some of our most formative mythology is warning us to be wary of trickstersNefarious wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2024 5:52 amWe used to have an old (c. 1910s) book called "The Art of Cold Reading" as a coffee table curio. It was basically an instruction manual for how to do the fortune teller act.ZedLeg wrote: Thu Jun 29, 2023 8:31 am They seem to fit because they’re general enough to apply to anyone. Same con as psychics and seances.
A series of statements moving from the completely general to the specific based on responses; non-specific positive statements that people *want* to hear; guesses based on probability and plausible sounding diversions when you get them wrong
Obvious really, but perhaps slightly surprising (for it age) in its outright cynicism.

Maybe I should try this, I realised years ago that there are certain phrases which you can say to anyone and they will immediately identify with them as being very specifically peronal, despite being a non-specific generalised comment; e.g. "It sounds like you're going through a period of profound change" aren't we all

It’s scary how easy it is to manipulate people once you figure out how to do it tbh.

Derren Brown regularly exposed "psychics" for the bullshitting charlatans they are. I immediately lose respect for anyone who genuinely believes this horseshit. There's a reason psychics never win the lottery.
If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

There is a substance to astrology : it's brown and sticky and is ejected from the bottoms of male bovine ungulates.
Re: Is there any substance to astrology?
Said brown substance actually comes from matter from within stars. So you may be onto something Mikmik wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2024 12:13 pm There is a substance to astrology : it's brown and sticky and is ejected from the bottoms of male bovine ungulates.
How about not having a sig at all?

There is actually some substance. You tell someone who believes in this shit that a certain star sign has a certain personality trait I bet they start to exert those things, because suddenly “is unreasonable in every argument” has an excuse, it’s “because I was born in Capricorn” not just “I’m an unbearable cunt”mik wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2024 12:13 pm There is a substance to astrology : it's brown and sticky and is ejected from the bottoms of male bovine ungulates.

If it gives people some comfort, let them have it, if it’s how they operate their life, it’s a bit sad.
It’s no different than religion imo.

My 4 year old nephew in Brazil went running into the kitchen a couple of weeks ago proclaiming 'Mummy, I've killed a scorpion in my bedroom'.
And sure enough, he had. Hard as nails!
