Money for old rope right ? My wife wants our wills sorted out, the previous ones were nullified when we married, err, a bit over 16 years ago, it's about £1k for them to fill in what is presumably just a standard template they use ? There's nothing weird about our circumstances that needs special provisions.

I feel like I CBA doing it myself but that's a lot of money.

Could use a local will writer rather than a solicitor. They're normally a few hundred quid. Have you got POA? If not, it would be worth getting those as well.

I expect it’s like most legal stuff, they prey on the idea that if you don’t involve a law monger, then it’ll get torn apart by other law mongers.

I guess it depends on what you want done with your estate? We're having ours done (been talking about it since before the eldest was born) next week.

From what I can understand dependents, foreign assets, and special requests complicate things.

Mine was under £200 a few years back, and then it's just £30 if you ever want to change it if you're using their storage facility to keep it, which is £35 a year.

A grand seems ridic.

A grand is ridiculous. We don’t really do wills but my father still does them for people whose wills we hold and I think he charged £300+VAT for that for a couple of have two wills.

Wills are a loss leader really - not for businesses where that is all they do but for solicitors - so pricing isn’t necessarily consistent. But there is a month where you can get your wills done for free; Google that and take advantage. Not all firms observe it but plenty do.

I found them very good. They 'will' try and sell you a trust for your property and other add ons like storing your Wills which you can do easily yourself using HM Courts and Tribunals Service for 22 quids rather than a yearly charge a solicitor would bill you.

Al information is useful. Mine is from experience and I would not be suggesting to contact those folk if they were cheap and rubbish

Again read the reviews - the usual price for a mirror will is £145.00 not a grand anyway.

I believe my dad got all his friends to do this (most of them had assets in yachts, and liabilities in harbour space yadda yadda that would need a degree of management/handover etc that's easier if it's in writing) or something similar, because having a will is a really helpful thing to have, even if it is a bit morbid to think about.

Did he do it for himself? Did he fuck

Thankfully the harbour master was very understanding and helped us a lot with paperwork for faithers - then our - own floating workshed and he had sod all other assets so the rest was relatively straightforward.

My brother and I were talking about this recently. My Dad doesn't have a will but he really should have one as he has a relatively complex estate, kids who live in 3 different countries (I'm guessing there are some tax impacts to this) plus other family responsibilities ( His sister shares 1 of his 2 houses but isn't on the deeds etc.). Plus my Mum also doesn't have one so it's a bit of a mess for 2 people in their 80's

It's impossible to talk to him about it at the best of times but he's really sensitive about it now as he's recovering from cancer so it's hard to talk about wills without referencing his mortality etc.

Similar here really (but less complex), my Dad was always quite open talking about wills & inheritances but now it's more of a real consideration he's not so keen. The 7-year window was always "there's loads of time before that's an issue" but now not so much

We're probably in a good place with our folks, seeing how we've got both EPA and updated recent wills.

I should probably get a will too, although it's easier for me being single with no kids, but I do need to work out which donkey sanctuary to choose

So far this year I've got a client with terminal brain cancer at 56, another with terminal lung cancer at 54, another with terminal pancreatic cancer at 66, a client that died three weeks ago of cancer at 51, a client with a MS diagnosis at 40, a client with aggressive skin cancer at 52, a client with degenerative Cardiomyopathy that's left him unable to work at 46 and this morning I spoke with a client with prostate cancer at 42. Youngest claim was a 15 year old for a rare type of bone cancer (he's fine now thankfully).

All of these were insured and yet not all were completely satisfied with what they got paid out. As my client said to me this morning, if I'd known I would be claiming, I would have had medical cover as well, hindsight and all that.

Point is you feel a lot worse for not doing it. Not just because financially you're in a worse position but because you feel like you've let people down.

Just get it done, you'll feel good afterwards
