About 1 acre of land and about 3600sq ft internal space.

@Carlos, I used a specialist bridging chap I know through work to fund it (currently we seem to own 3 properties, none of which produces an income, but this is being resolved relatively quickly). I shall be dropping you a line in March to start finding a normal mortgage.

I searched RightMove for Worcestershire but I had to adjust my minimum budget down a few times until I got a match - as has been said - that's a hell of a lot of property for the price.

Quick question - is that a river or a canal near it - hard to tell from Google Maps ??

It's a canal with a nice towpath for walking and cycling. It was actually a bike ride which took me up there about a decade ago that first took me to the village and I liked it. Never thought I'd buy a house there :lol:

Our insurer asked all sorts of questions about the canal, said it wasn't a water course (which it isn't really so I went with that) and then when I rang back to put the policy in place decided it was so they had to run through the entire quote again. The canal made no difference to the premium. It's in a bit of a cutting and if it ever had too much water in, it would just flood over the locks down towards Worcester.

'Had to adjust your minimum price down' :lol: It was a bit of a deal; our valuation came in at £950k but we've paid £915k and it was originally on the market at £1.15m. Yes, you do get more for your money in the shires.

A reasonable way from the Queen’s Head - further away than Hanbury. In the hinterland between Droitwich and Worcester.

We've been having the same conversation this week! Not Jobbo's fault here though. Wife was surprised at how cheap the house is that's for sale next door to her parents. Literally half what ours would be. Then I started looking near my parents in Cornwall and found a lovely place in Marazion with views of St. Michael's Mount - for about the same price as our 30's semi in S. Manchester, but with an annexe that could probably return at least the monthly mortgage payments we have... :lol: Could virtually retire :shock:

Trouble is when you have kids, and they're happy in the school they're in. Tricky.

Thirded on the conversation about property-for-peanuts(ish) outside of London/major cities. Assuming you could find a plot of that size around here you wouldn't get change from £3.5m I reckon, and if you headed over Keston way you could add another couple of million on top of that.

We're staying around here. Kids are settled, we've got friends, grandparents are less than an hour away, my sister is about an hour away, SiL is about 20 mins away and so on

But it does make you dream.

In all seriousness, that's how much a house like that _should_ cost. It's just that prices in the south particularly, have gone crazy.

That house of Jobbo's would easily be a couple of £mil around here in S. Manchester so it's not much better in some areas up here

I agree. That's the cost of foreign investment in property driving up the prices, I think.

It will never come to pass, but as a thought experiment it would interesting to consider what would happen if they introduced similar legislation to Denmark. If you buy a property as an individual you have an obligation to live in it. There is some leeway (e.g., you can rent it out to cover working abroad for a limited period), but you cannot hoard property in the same way as has happened here.

For summerhouses you must demonstrate a strong connection to the country before you're allowed to buy, irrespective of whether you've agreed to buy or not. That keeps prices low, as an example we looked last year and found that similar houses to the one we rented for a week (90sqm, fully kitted out, in really good condition, five mins from a great beach, one hour from Copenhagen), was easily found for about £130k.

There's some crazy stuff going on, its an interesting and infuriating rabbit hole to go down.

It's looking like the cost to build our place will be about 100K more than its worth once done as it's such a small & limited housing market in the north of Scotland. Which is fine as we're not building it to sell, but is causing some interesting conversations with the lenders.
