Speaking of, new C63 4 pot hybrid which weighs 2.5 tonnes. Never seen one despite being on sale over a year. The C63 was probably the most popular performance car in London aside from the 911, so I’m guessing no one has bought one?

They've really balls'ed it up. Saloon is 2165kg, estate is 2190kg, and consequently it got pretty slated in the reviews because there's no hiding nearly 2.2 tonnes in a small saloon. Add in the lost v8 noise and insane Merc pricing nowadays (and you can't haggle) and who the hell would buy one anymore? Such a shame. Could've been good with a hot'd up E53 drive train, but they've lost their way. C43 looks a better bet TBH.

It would, but it's still a 4-cyl. Competing with a Golf R Estate is not where a proper AMG badged Merc should be. E-class it has to be!

Yeah, but - 4 cylinders. Having said that my wife's Macan is 4-cyl and it's quite a nice engine; I could live with the EA888 engine. Unlike that Volvo V90 I had which was a bit coarse.

I find the EA888 a bit rough tbh. Maybe I've just forgotten how coarse 4cyl are after 11 years with an IL6

I didn't even realise it was in the Macan Simon, let alone thought of it being longitudinal - you might have a point there.

Has got me wondering if the Audi A4/A5/A6 with the 40 and 45TSI engines use the EA888; they’ll all have a longitudinally mounted engine too. Perhaps @240PP knows?

New terminology to me. Wikipedia has:

2.0 L EA888 TFSI I4 + Mild Hybrid 48V 190 (40 TFSI / 40 TFSI S-Line)

2.0 L EA888 CDLA TFSI I4 + Mild Hybrid 48V 252 (45 TFSI/45 TFSI Quattro)

Mild hybrid too, who knew?

A6 45tsi. Longitudinal as you assumed. And quite a lot of engine visible for a modern Audi

The MLB platform cars all have longitudinal engines - I was more which variant of the engine was fitted.

A friend of mine managed to get a current 320d on his company car scheme on the basis of the ‘mild hybrid’ tag; though he pays for it in co car tax. My S6 is mild hybrid too; it seems to mean they come with 48v electrics which means the stop/start is much more seamless and it can sail with the engine off for quite a long way - not sure if the starter/generator actually provides a small amount of power to counteract drag because it seems able to do it longer than I would have expected if just in neutral.
