First Cars - Insurance
First Cars - Insurance
The boy is 17 in a few months so is starting to look at cars. It will have to be a washing machine due to insurance costs but other than looking at insurance groups I cant get a quote unless i put a made up DOB in the insurance sites. They won't quote on a driver until they are 17. Which also means I wont be able to insure anything we buy for him until his birthday.
Id like to be able to run something through a quote machine to make sure anything we buy is actually insurable. Which i suppose i could do with made up details. This seems a bit stupids though.
Advice?
Budget will be about £3k for the car i expect.

I feel like you've answered your own question here I mean it's not ideal but it'll let you know where to aim.
Gavster also asked about this recently, so some nuggets here for cheapish cars

Re: First Cars - Insurance
As you mention you'll have to put a fictitious kid in for a quote. I've had to do it twice recently and as a learner he can have a learner policy with you named on there and they are typically cheap (<£500) for most cars but they have to be cancelled when he passes and then the pain starts.
I would be looking at something group 5 or less if he intends to keep it and insure it after he passes his test. Fiestas seem popular but relatively expensive given the group which i assume is a consequence of lots of youngsters having them.
Cheap and sporty Skoda and Seat work out well. The Citigo Monte Carlo and Mii FR are group 1, the Mii is also 75bhp rather than 60.
My son has an Ibiza FR which is group 4 for the 80hp MPI but would jump to group 11 for the 95hp TSI!

Nephew has an MG3 that's reasonable.
Re: First Cars - Insurance
May be worth running quotes on something he fancies but not in any way associated with a young driver like a knackered Cayenne?
My 18yr old daughter has been quoted £1660 for a 996, half what she is paying for her GT86!

There must be a seriously low incidence of youngsters crashing 996's!
That was in her name but I assume it will be less as a named driver if I buy the car which is what she is pushing for lol

They seemed to have crept up the last year.
A few 40 Jahre cars have sold for 40-50k.

My 17 year old has a w204 C180 manual coupe. £800 a year to insure with NFU, I’m on the policy as well. Car was £5600 when I bought it but quite a few saloons/estates or ropey coupes available for £3k.
Surprisingly cheap for what is a pretty nice car.

Re: First Cars - Insurance
I like seeing things like this - cars that aren't obvious choices for young drivers that manage to slip under the radar.

Re: First Cars - Insurance
is that as a learner or passed?
Re: First Cars - Insurance
I’m more surprised that it’s a sensible quote with the NFU who I can only describe as the biggest thieves in the insurance industry
How about not having a sig at all?
