Porsche 914 "restomod"

Post by John »

I'm sure it goes well and the attention to detail looks very good but would you buy one, even if money was no object?

Mellors Elliot who are behind this creation tweaked my Escort RS turbo back in the day.

No - the wheels don’t sit right for a start. If it looked a bit more correct then it would be an interesting curio.

I mean, the people who made it call it a restomod, but it's a rebodied cayman with a redone interior and some engine and chassis tweeks, not a rebuilt 914 so it seems like they've got it backwards.

Now if they'd actually taken a 914 and put, say, an Impreza engine in there and modernised the lines, beefed up the chassis etc then that would have been interesting. And likely more challenging.

But they didn't. So very 'meh' to me.

You’d start with a 914/6 and put a GT3 engine in it, wouldn’t you? Rather than using a 4-cyl. And even if you did think a 4-cyl 914 restomod was the way to go, you’d surely use a 718 Cayman/Boxster engine?

Mind you, you’d also think Top Gear Magazine would know a 987 never had anything bigger than a 3.4 engine…

It looks like one of those EV recreations like the Renault 5 EV or the Hyundai 74. I don't particularly care for it.
How about not having a sig at all?

I was expecting to fully hate it but actually I think (from a purely stylistic point of view) it would be rescued with a less plastic looking front bumper /grille and smaller wheels. I like the side profile and interior.

Much better. Never liked the 914/6 much, something about the proportions and angles is off, but comparing the two efforts, the latter wins by a mile.

This is better.
That looks like it's something that could almost have been done in period, I like it.
