Broadband providers
Broadband providers
We are wanting to get rid of Virgin Media as it has been getting more and more unreliable recently and they say there is no problem. We are looking at getting Sky Glass but we will need a broadband supply. Who is good to provide a fast, reliable service?
Re: Broadband providers
Unless you have a company willing to put in their own fibre cable it will make no difference. It all comes through the same exchange and same phone line.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Broadband providers
Oh, how do they advertise different speeds?
Re: Broadband providers
It’s based off what 50% of customers should expect to get - not sure aside from that. Cheaper contracts do limit speeds, but if you go for the maximum available your limiting factor will be your phone line and distance to exchange.

Re: Broadband providers
Well the exchange is about half a mile away.
Re: Broadband providers
The exchange isn't the only thing that impacts speed - backbone contention is a major factor, as is the quality is the networks internal routing on the ISP side.
Ie most isps run over provisioned, that is they have more customers than bandwidth for their advertised speeds.
Smaller, more specialised ISPs have a much healthier contention ratio, such as IDNet who charge more to cover thier costs, but those costs typically go into making sure thier network is not secondary to the size of the dividends the directors get....
Re: Broadband providers
Recently moved from BT whom were good but expensive to Now TV and apart from the 400 quid a year saving I haven't seen any negative differences.
Not fibre mind.

Re: Broadband providers
I was in the situation you are. We’ve got sky glass as we can’t get a dish and needed good internet. We had standard broadband which was dire so our only option was virgin. Thankfully it seems pretty reliable up to now unlike your experience

Never had a bad word to say about IDNet. The fact that any nonsense Openreach shit gets sorted in <12hrs never ceases to amaze me.Beany wrote: ↑Sat Mar 12, 2022 4:38 pmThe exchange isn't the only thing that impacts speed - backbone contention is a major factor, as is the quality is the networks internal routing on the ISP side.

Re: Broadband providers
Yeah, they seem to be staffed, including customer service, by network engineers; so they don't go through three layers of customer service before going 'yeah, Openreach have cocked it up' and getting the fault ticket in.Swervin_Mervin wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 4:47 pmNever had a bad word to say about IDNet. Never had any Openreach problems with them, and the problems I have had have been fixed by the time I've dug out my account number and whatnot and called them. I think that's happened twice, in what must be more than eight years with them now.
Re: Broadband providers
CityFibre recently wired up the whole area so even though we still have 5 months left on our Zen deal, we're going to switch to full wired Fibre at pay day. Zen are fine an all but we're about 100m from the exchange here so it can be quite slow and a significant step down from our last place (which is in the same estate but much closer to the Exchange)
Virgin are coming out £10 / month cheaper than anyone else at £35/ month for the Full Fibre 900 package (minimum 450Mbps) and they're also throwing in some home hardware, booster tech etc.
As an aside, I had a Sky Engineer in recently who said 60 to 70 Mbps is the minimum you need of you want Sky Glass and 3 or 4 other devices running (phones, xBox etc)

Re: Broadband providers
I’d say that’s a fair assessment, I can tell how much slower anything loads on my phone whilst using the tv

Re: Broadband providers
I went with City Fibre (Vodafone is the ISP) who had no issues running the fibre to my house. Getting a solid 110Mb up and down. Conversely, the useless twats at Virgin refused to run the cable to my house despite both my neighbours having it.dinny_g wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 9:36 am CityFibre recently wired up the whole area so even though we still have 5 months left on our Zen deal, we're going to switch to full wired Fibre at pay day. If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.
Re: Broadband providers
Cheers Delphi...
We have 5 options for ISP so if Virgin play silly buggers, we have options.

Re: Broadband providers
Did some more research and opted for Vodaphone in the end.
I was a bit disappointed with Zen who wanted £68 for the same service (900Mbps Fibre to the property plus phone line) that Vodaphone are charging £26
Installation is next Friday.

Re: Broadband providers
That's because Zen are a real ISP with far, far better contention and quality of service than Voda.
That said, as a normy and not a hardcore techy who requires 99.999 uptime etc, the difference will likely be academic.
Re: Broadband providers
I still remember after struggling to cancel my Vodafone mobile contract 10 years ago I vowed to never give those cunts a penny ever again. Good luck Dinny
