The demise of AMG
The demise of AMG
With this world of 4 cylinders, chintzy shiny glitzy crap and ooh wrap it in chrome and slap an AMG badge on it, it was only going to happen.
AMG have finally jumped the shark.

You're just getting old Dave, not down with the kids anymore. They don't want oily bits (on their cars at least) or know how to gap a MAF correctly. They're the iPhone generation where a new app solves the problem!

I know the new 4 banger C63 won't be everyone's taste, but the world is changing and like it or not cars, including performance cars, have to change with it. As such I have little time for the people who's say 'the only real C63 is the 6.2 W204' etc.V8Granite wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 7:37 am With this world of 4 cylinders, chintzy shiny glitzy crap and ooh wrap it in chrome and slap an AMG badge on it, it was only going to happen.

I'm intrigued by the new C63 anyway. It has the electric motor from the GT coupe e-Performance so should be no slouch.

Not AMG but more generally Mercedes related - I see from CarWow that even the S500 is no longer a V8

I don’t like the new performance car world, it’s dull.Simon wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 9:09 amI know the new 4 banger C63 won't be everyone's taste, but the world is changing and like it or not cars, including performance cars, have to change with it. Now if you give me a few hours, I just need to fire up the boiler for a run to the shops

The general reduction in cylinder count is a sad inevitability.
I hate the cheapening of great brands for marketing shenanigans though. AMG. M-division. Cooper. Etc etc

Re: The demise of AMG
There is a stunning condition E39 M5 in the town which just oozes class.
I’d say Merc is the worst of the lot and The BMW M5 has always stayed quite handsome and understated.

Re: The demise of AMG
Have you seen the current M5? Not a great looking or understated car. I think peak M5 was E39, E34, E60, E28. In that order.

The last one I saw in the flesh was when they introduced the TT 4.4 V8.DeskJockey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 6:58 pm Have you seen the current M5? Not a great looking or understated car. I think peak M5 was E39, E34, E60, E28. In that order.
I saw this on the ferry and forgot how great they looked

It has aged incredibly well.
I’m guessing it was a pricey option as not many cars about have it ? Although a similar brown is seen on a lot of X3s.

Re: The demise of AMG
I agree. But I've always really liked the look of the E60 (especially in M5 guise). I think it just became the norm to say they were ugly and jump on anti-bangle bandwagon just because. I also think a lot of it stemmed from Clarkson.. but not all of Bangle's offerings were ugly!
You do indeed see the bronze more often on the modern stuff, but yeah, more of a brown.
I'd love an E64 M6 in that Bronze

Re: The demise of AMG
Every Bangle design has grown on me a little bit over time but I don’t think any of them will be seen as classics.
Re: The demise of AMG
The E60 is/was a great looking car (though only in M sport level) - I think they're now in that "chavvy banger" stage of life though - whether they'll emerge as a classy classic the other side is anyone's guess.
Re: The demise of AMG
Hmmm. Not sure. I think the Z4 SI/M could be worth keeping an eye on, and I can really see the E60/61 M5 being worth a few quid. M6 maybe. E61 550i another maybe.

Re: The demise of AMG
I think you're right there. Most E60's I see are knackered..

Re: The demise of AMG
E92 M3 had the last ever BMW NA engine, the only V8 M3, etc - the engine is definitely what will make it into a classic. But I don't think the m5/6 V10 has quite the same attraction - even though it really should. I'm not sure the M6 ever had much love? I can see the M5 touring being the classic.
Z4Ms are already firm money - they're a done deal classic.
