We all have our vices
We all have our vices
I want a half-decent 150mm (6” for you Mercuns) vice. Currently looking at this
https://www.screwfix.com/p/magnusson-wo ... e-6-/8258V
Don’t really trust most of the unknown brand ebay offerings which are a good bit cheaper but may well be made of cheese.
Any personal recommendations?

Have a look at the Machine Mart range, I haven't managed to break one yet despite abusing them.
I'm a bit unsure with Magnusson stuff, it's just B&Qs own rebranded Chinese stuff from what I've seen.

How about not having a sig at all?

This looks pretty good actually. Recognised brand. Max opening 180mm vs 150mm for the Magnusson.

Why do you want a vice with rotating head?
Suspect the Clarke one is just as Chinese as the Magnusson, anyway.

65 quids worth of chinese vice will be dog shit i'm afraid, but ok if its for very light use once in a blue moon.
Get yourself an old Record vice off ebay or facebook if you can, not the modern chinese Record shit either.

This was £50 off ebay, it weighs about 30 kilos and is indestructible.
Re: We all have our vices
That’s a good shout. Maybe an old Record No5 would do me…. (5” wide jaws).
Re: We all have our vices
What you bolt it to is more important in most cases. No point having a strong vice if you just end up pulling your bench around the garage.

Re: We all have our vices
Just reminded me I need to get new jaws for my record. It must be 40 years old and I inherited it from my dad, they certainly wear but are largely indestructible.

Re: We all have our vices
I’ve smashed the crap out of my £50odd machine mart one for the last 10+ years and it’s been fine.
Cheers, Harry

Only partially related, but here's a video of someone restoring a fractal vice. I'd never heard of one before and they are fascinating.

Here's another resto by, IMO, the best restoration channel on YT. His attention to detail is unparalleled.

I spent a while watching eBay. Old Record 4” vices start at around £80 (delivered) for scabby ones with (often) very scant info on their condition.
Remembering my dad’s old Record woodworkers vice, and how we used it many times to press wheel bearings into hubs (which required the use of a 2kg (usually 4lb actually) persuader acting on the end of the bar. It took a pounding.
But having no plans to do similar, and given it’s intended (hobby not business) use - I just got one of these instead. 5” version.
It seems OK, and despite claiming to open to 130mm (which I thought was pretty meh), it actually opens to 170mm.
End.
