Guess how much?
So, the 928 is loud. Too loud. Reason being it has an X-pipe exhaust and no back box, just straight pipes. If I was going to turn it into a track car, it would be fine, but I'm not. I want a comfortable, relatively refined GT. In an attempt to quieten it down I thought I'd try and get at least a rear silencer for it and go from there. So, on the recommendation of several local Porsche owners, I've just visited a local firm that custom makes stainless steel exhausts to order. He got the car up in the air and had a good look and agreed a back box was the way to go and maybe look at adding silencers further up if it wasn't quiet enough for my tastes. He then gave me a price (including fitting).
Take a guess how much.

Re: Guess how much?
I'm gonna say either £200 (surprisingly cheap) or £1500 (reassuringly expensive).

£250.
My experience with these independents was that they don't charge enough.

The price for a stainless steel, custom-made, made to measure back box is £200 including fitting. I couldn't believe how cheap it was! Needless to say, it's booked in and I paid a deposit there and then. Encouragingly, he's booked up til the end of May, but I managed to get a cancellation for the 10th May.

Re: Guess how much?
Have you been reading about a cheap fella in Leeds where I got mine done Andy

Yeah, that's the direction I thought the post was headingSundayjumper wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 2:53 pmIt probably wouldn't be fine, tracks normally have noise limits.
I'd expect Tony Banks or another name that I'll recognise as soon as I see it, but can never actually remember them when required

Please make sure they do the tail pipe properly and it looks OEM. Pet hate of mine with 928s is the terrible bit of steel pipe poking out the back that clearly someone has fabricated for 50p with no eye as to aesthetics.Delphi wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 2:51 pm The price for a stainless steel, custom-made, made to measure back box is £200 including fitting. ETA they should be matt black - single large oval on an S4. Not like this

Good darts.
I mentioned before going to Meercat Exhausts up here - he charged me £50 to remove and open up a Janspeed exhaust I had got for the 944 that was painfully loud. Cleaned up the melty mess inside, filled with long-strand competition wadding, closed it back up and refitted it.
And I got to dribble over Colin McRae’s mk2 Escort whilst he did the work - it was in for him to make custom headers.

Re: Guess how much?
That car also has the wrong wheels. Nice colour though. The one I had on a poster on my bedroom wall as a boy was a black one.

Re: Guess how much?
I think that's a GT actually rather than an S4 so in theory the correct wheels. We had white, blue and then guards red - ironically patriotic Agree the black looks mean though.
Re: Guess how much?
That would be their new silencers I suppose?

Re: Guess how much?
Not necessarily... My S4 has the same pipes and they are the contemporary "Sports Exhaust" option available on (I think) MY90 and 91 cars. The centre resonators and back box are smaller than the standard S4 pipes, for a little more auditory "presence".GG. wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 3:15 pmPlease make sure they do the tail pipe properly and it looks OEM. Delphi - if yu've not binned it, can I have the straight-through pipe off yours? I've a hankering to hear what mine is like with nothing but the small resonators and an X-pipe.
Re: Guess how much?
The ones on that car are nowhere near correct unless I'm very much mistaken. They're always matt black or grey tint for a start and not bare stainless steel.
Twin pipe OEM option looked like the below I believe
