Re: Today’s want
If it *is* the timing chain it looks like it’s about £1k of parts plus the same again in labour. For a car that age/mileage it’s likely to be on the cards whether it’s been declared or not.
Rich - or buy one at twice the price and still have the same list of jobs to do ?
I’m going to email them...

Re: Today’s want
Absolutely - so long as you don't end up spending £10k+ for a car that'll only ever be worth something like £7k then it makes sense.Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:49 pm Rich - or buy one at twice the price and still have the same list of jobs to do ?
(These figures are generalised, not saying they are worth that)

Re: Today’s want
Don’t the non turbo v8s have other engine issues?
I’d have thought if it was the timing chain you’d be able to hear it rattling away.
Wonder if they’d let you take a code reader with you if you went to view it?

From my quick Googling, there’s a big difference between a “stretched” chain and a weak tensioner, but both can give similar symptoms.integrale_evo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 7:31 pm Don’t the non turbo v8s have other engine issues?

Seller got back to me pretty quickly:
“Hi the fault code is definitely coming up as a loose chain on a proper computer. It’s makes no sounds or restricted performance other than the light you wouldn’t know. No other mechanical issues drives faultless. Has the odd mark around the bodywork shown in pictures. Last owner had it for 10 years with thousands spent on it”

I've got a soft spot for the W211 series, can see the allure if you need something comfy to while away big distances in.speedingfine wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 7:54 pm Dull want:

Nice bus. Obviously cared about if it's running around on Michelin Alpins.speedingfine wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 8:53 pmAlas the missus wants our next car to be able to tow a horsebox and it seems I'm slowly being brainwashedRich B wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 8:28 pmI didn't know you had 5 kids?speedingfine wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 7:54 pm Dull want:

Tyres really are the best indicator about the previous owner, the amount of approved used cars I see running landsail tyres etcMcSwede wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 9:34 pmNice bus. Re: Today’s want
I paid £7k for my turbo, wouldn’t bother with a normal S.Sundayjumper wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:49 pm If it *is* the timing chain it looks like it’s about £1k of parts plus the same again in labour. For a car that age/mileage it’s likely to be on the cards whether it’s been declared or not.

Exactly. If they go cheap on tyres what other sacrifices get made during maintenance.Foz wrote: ↑Mon Jan 11, 2021 9:36 amTyres really are the best indicator about the previous owner, the amount of approved used cars I see running landsail tyres etcMcSwede wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 9:34 pmNice bus. Same at work with colleagues and company cars. Most of them just let the tyre fitter put on anything so long as it gets new tyres.
Re: Today’s want
It’s just good marketing, tyres are all just black and round.
