Sounds like there’s a whole host of different factors - a comment was made that ‘we could have gone faster but for the front axle’. No idea what that means - motors that act on the front wheels were at the limit?

Anyway I guess the acceleration / top speed balance is pretty optimised if it’s only hitting the limiter in top for a few seconds out of a 5.19.5 lap.

You’ve quoted the 2017 qualifying lap. Fastest lap was 1:46.577. The bus stop chicane has also been butchered quite a bit in the 13 years.

For a long lap like the ring I think race pace is way more important. F1 quali lap times are currently faster as they qualify on barely any fuel and have a fully charged hybrid system plus multiple attempts. In the old days you had one lap with race fuel.
Looking at the 919 video it’s mainly in 720bhp with the odd hybrid boost of 400bhp. It also weighs 250kg more. The V10s were pushing on 1000bhp.

There’s loads of F1 cars in the hands of private millionaires and competitively racing in the BOSS series so I’m a bit miffed as to why no one has tried it.
The once decent BMW Sauber said their V8 could lap the ring in 5:15 - according to the engineers. May be bollocks.

The only thing that's made me think is; I wonder if they take sector times during the lap, if so I wonder how close the lap time was to his potential perfect lap time (apart from 'very' )?


Bouncing down the final straight makes me chuckle when I remember a quote from of the Le Mans drivers back in the long Mulsanne Straight days, along the lines of 'it's nice, you can have a bit of a rest'

Same. It would be interesting to see how fast it would go, especially as it takes the best road racers years to learn how to go quickly at the TT course.

I doubt they could just turn up over the course of a couple of days start beating the motorcycle record.

A couple of bits more info on the lap;

the Michelin slicks used had such a short life that Bernhard couldn't do a warm up lap. He had to drive the wrong way for a kilometre, do a u-turn and start there.
It can generate that much stick a second power steering pump had to be fitted so it could be turned into high speed corners.
Bernhard did 200mph over the crest at Schwedenkreuz and into the compression at the bottom of Foxhole
On the final straight he was indeed bouncing off the limiter at 229mph, but the front axle 'wasn't allowed' to go more than 223. Naughty Timo
