The Music Thread
Re: The Music Thread
Yeah Crosses are great.
I’ve always said that Chino and the Deftones were done dirty by being lumped in with Nu Metal. They’re way more interesting than that.

Re: The Music Thread
Yeah. I'd love to know whether their early sound came about because of the general vibe of nu-metal at the time, as their early stuff did share a lot of that nu-metal sound. I think the key to their evolution over the years has been that friction between Carpenter wanting to pull them in the heavy direction and Moreno wanting to pull them in the melodic direction.ZedLeg wrote: Thu Aug 15, 2024 12:24 pm Yeah Crosses are great.

Re: The Music Thread
Yeah, I think there’s some crossover between Around the fur and the first Korn album but I think as the rest of Nu Metal really leaned into hip hop, they kept doing their own thing.

Re: The Music Thread
Adrenaline was fairly well on the nu-metal vibe. With Around the Fur you can start to hear more of those 80s influences coming through and they started to carve their own path from there I'd say. I'm actually not that big a fan of Around the Fur, weirdly. Loved Adrenaline and then it really kicked off with White Pony for me. One of my top 5 albums I'd say.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2024 6:44 am Yeah, I think there’s some crossover between Around the fur and the first Korn album but I think as the rest of Nu Metal really leaned into hip hop, they kept doing their own thing.
Re: The Music Thread
Yeah, I think the first two are a bit formulaic. White Pony was when I really got onboard with them. The self titled album is my favourite tbh, love the soundscapes.

I’m in that exact place right now. Dave Grohl is indeed correct, it’s a beautiful part of the world.
I have met no rock stars on this trip though…

Re: The Music Thread
Bit of mess at the moment in relation to Sick Boi.
Long vid: essentially Ren purchased a beat from Kujo Beats which includes a choir sample that was used without the rights to do so. Legal shizzle. Song currently removed from all platforms whilst it’s all sorted out. Messy.

Re: The Music Thread
Yeah I saw that video, all sounds like a mess and Kujo is proclaiming he's justified in his actions so I'm curious how it will all play out considering that Ren has so many receipts and messages backing his side of the story.mik wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2024 10:12 pmBit of mess at the moment in relation to Sick Boi.

Also Ren has a premiere on Thursday which seems to be some kind of diss track about the whole situation
Re: The Music Thread
Weirdly I was trying to find out where that choir sound was from when I first heard the song months ago. It's a sped-up version of an obscure traditional Bulgarian folk hymn thing.
Re: The Music Thread
Listened to another Scary Pockets song on youtube:
Thought process:
1. Hey there's that Nurburgring Misha Charoudin bloke playing sax with them
2. Oh I like her voice
3. Christ that bass constantly just octaving is doing my nut in
4. But yes - nice voice.
5. I wonder if she "just" sings?
Ah yes. She definitely does
Yeah there is someone there controlling the loops she is creating and fiddling with some levels, but still rather impressive.

Re: The Music Thread
She must have pre-recorded all the loop recording and play back. Damn impressive. See also the linked video off that one..
And this one that explains it - yep, the timings and record/playback actions are set up in advance, just the small matter of playing every instrument perfectly at the right time then
Gonna check out more of her stuff now.
I don't use Ableton Live. Dawless jams (making shit up) FTW!

So it’s software controlling the loops rather than a 2nd person - conceptually simple butJonMad wrote: Fri Sep 13, 2024 11:53 pm And this one that explains it - yep, the timings and record/playback actions are set up in advance, just the small matter of playing every instrument perfectly at the right time then![]()

Re: The Music Thread
Yeah, she makes it look effortless, but it must be loads of practice, if she misses one cue it’s fucked.
And does the song have to sound the same every time she plays it, or does she also have variations, e.g. here’s one where the bass is a longer loop, or the drums come in a little later…
I’d not heard about her until now, so thanks!

Re: The Music Thread
Not seen this mentioned yet. Linkin Park back with a female vocalist. Loving this.
They also have the full hour of live show from a couple of weeks ago where she was introduced.

Re: The Music Thread
Hated this when I first heard this. Guess it was an immediate kind of prejudiced reaction as I grew up with linking park, but it’s really growing on me. Some of her live performances of the old stuff are great, some not so much

Re: The Music Thread
I've found myself getting into a lot of Sleep Token this year - the music, just to be clear. The whole worship bollocks they spout can GTF. Until recently they were an "anonymous collective" but some were determined to sleuth who they were. Anyway, the drummer's not too shabby:
Hypnosis is one of my favourite tracks from their 2021 album. I particularly like the cymbal work of II as he's known
Alkaline is another favourite of mine. This is from the first interview any of them have done and it's a longer video with Drumeo:
It's hard to stop though really! Could list many more, not least Like That which from the above vid is his favourite drum part he's written.

Keeping on the drumming, I've watched this guy's channel a few times, but hadn't seen this reaction video from a few months back. Here's a 9yo crushing Slipknot

I found Kneecap the other day, they're Irish rappers and their music rocks
