Measure twice...

Post by Nefarious »

So, my mission for this weekend was to build a staircase while the girls are away at a wedding.
Under strict instructions not to make a massive mess in the house, the plan was to get Zoran, my joiner, to make up the main pieces in the garage, assemble the main structure in situ, then measure up for the more complicated pieces that go underneath.

Except, when we came to fit the 'frame', we discovered this:

There are hardwood treads to go on top and they're 30mm thick. He's forgotten to take that into account, and so every riser was 30mm too short, making the top step 210mm too low.

So, panic stations. 36 hours to fix before the girls get home...

10am. 9 hours to go

1pm. 5 hours left

Pretty much functional now. Bit more strengthening to do, and hoping to get the treads on, but the panic is now at least subsiding.

It would all be a lot easier if every my house wasn't what we technically know as pissed - not a right angle in the whole place!

Yet to work in a house that has. New builds worse than old houses sometimes

The (nearly) finished article:

Still needs a few detail pieces and another coat of varnish, but then I'm ready to start decanting some of my kitchen cupboard and getting all OCD with the label printer ;-)

+1 - yeah, that’s very nice. I think we need a short vid to check out the ‘action’ 8-)

We have something similar u set our main stairs for hats, gloves and shoes etc. It frees up loads of space.

Very nicely done.

Love the storage, I'd probably end up in A&E within the first week, very high probability of me falling head first off the edge (I am very clumsy, I'm the person who broke their wrist and needed 3 pins from tripping over pavement).

With hindsight I would have replasterboarded the walls and taken up and levelled the floor before we started. 7 day job grew to a 17 day job because *nothing* was square. After the initial cock up with the frame sizing, the frame and three boxes went together *perfectly*, but the trouble started trying to fit it between the two walls. Both have a bow in them, and the angle between them is about 85, rather than 90. And the floor slopes away in both directions, and has a little warp along both edges.

The net result is that the *perfect* frame and boxes had to be taken apart multiple times to try and find a compromise between the boxes fitting in the frame and the frame fitting between the walls.

This has honestly been one of the hardest things I've ever done!

Great to see how good that looks. We've had our joiner around the other day and it looks like we'll be replacing our staircase with a new one plus all that type of built in storage.
