The correct reaction to finding out that 4D plates have been applied to a car.

I think they look ok.

For me the tinted plates look a bit naff, always on a black Range Rover sport and usually something like B055 ABC.

On a related note, I have a private plate that I have had for a long time, the plates have been recycled across many cars. Do I need to update it to include a modern kite mark and postcode?

No, only required if you have new plates made. If you reuse the existing physical plate and it was legal in the first place it remains legal.

ETA: hold on, that's not quite the full story now. It appears some fiddling has been going on over time by statutory instrument. I think the changes only relate to cars registered from 1 September 2021, which means they can't apply to anyone right now, but I haven't found a complete updated copy of the statute yet.
