Station Garage, Milnthorpe

Post by Sundayjumper »

Today I had a quite amazingly bad experience. After breaking the end off one of the tyre valves Saturday morning I thought I should probably try and get it fixed while we're up here to make sure I don't end up stranded somewhere, because it's bound to happen somewhere with no phone signal while it's pissing with rain.

This place claims to be a VAG specialist, does tyres & MOTS, not too far away, sounded perfect.

Short drive to Milnthorpe. I explained how it needs a new valve stem. The bloke reckoned a plain rubber valve would be fine as there's nothing inside.

Err, yes there is.

No there isn't, the ABS measures the tyre pressure, there's no box in there.

Yes there is, there's a sensor inside each tyre.

How do you know ? Have you taken the tyre off and had a look ?

Well, no, but I've already checked online what I need. I can show you.

Well maybe the internet can fix your tyre then. Not interested.

<turns back and walks off>

WTAF ?

Sounds like you dodged a bullet.

I like this picture.

Rear wheel pretty much lines up with the front diagonal, so it looks like they’ve drawn a crude front tyre on with MSPaint 8-)

Wonder how many people he'll relate his side of the story to?

Yeah, it would definitely be interesting to hear his version ! Something about a stupid southern wanker who thought he knew how cars work

This is what the "box" doesn't look like, that's not inside the tyre, and not attached to the valve:

Anyway, Lodge Tyres in Carnforth were the complete opposite. The guy knew exactly what I was on about, they don't keep them in stock but he's getting four new valve stems in for me for later in the week.

Sorted.

How much are they (out of interest, just curious)? I'm also wondering if they're forged wheels (because V12).
Did you use google to find the second garage?
I've been on both sides in similar situations so I'll stay out of any discussion about yours.

They're not forged, they're OEM ;) Actually, I don't know. They're not unique to the V12, they're a standard option, and not even particularly rare at that. But they have 295/35/21 tyres so that'll be fun when they need replacing.

Price of valve stems - I don't know that either. I'm not really in a position to argue right now. I'm 300 miles from home, I can't risk ordering them myself and not having them turn up in time, and even if they did I can't pop out to my usual friendly tyre place to get them fitted. On eBay they're a tenner each for genuine ones - CLICKY - or a quarter that for Chinese copies.

This is what my nsr one looks like right now and I'm genuinely quite concerned about clouting it on something and getting stranded. The car doesn't have a spare wheel, and with a broken valve I can't even put sealant in, or top up the pressure.

That's becoming a standard response to me
You might not be in a position to argue over the cost but it doesn't sound like you'd have to anyway 8-) I've just got vague memories from years ago of a tpms sensor/valve being £muchos and feared that might be the case.
Also handy that the wheels aren't V12 specific 8-)

The OEM sensors cost quite a bit but the valves are just held onto the sensor with a screw.
How about not having a sig at all?

Is it always you that asks ?? I was just enjoying doing the same dad joke over and over again :D

But yeah, the sensor itself is a lot more, but those are working fine; I just need the stem part.

Rears should be ~2.9 bar but obvs I can’t at the moment.

That’s a lot of bars.

Not similar in intent, but similar in weight - the Diisco4 ran 36psi. I suspect the higher pressures on yours are for high-speed-autobahn-storming purposes. You’ll be ok fur normal driving.

I'd be tempted to take the old one back to Milnthorpe and show that moron, in front of the rest of the staff. What a bell.

You know how you sometimes say stuff, and you’re pretty sure you’re right but then there’s a twinge of uncertainty ? I just did that and went out in the rain to be absolutely sure

I think I’d fudged it in my mind previously; 2.9 bar is the standard pressure in the front when unloaded (it’s a BFO engine), and as much as 3.4 in the back when fully loaded. The current 2.4 is definitely too low.

How did I not FIREY DEATH already ????

I wonder if the tyres you need are XL rated or not as that could explain the high tyre pressure ?

My first job was washing cars and filling petrol in an old skool independent place. Workshop down the back, pumps at the front, a tank of Red diesel. you can imagine the sort of place.

The two owners, two brothers, were great to their staff but hated people and it showed... and was formal policy.

On my first morning, the younger brother explained that "The customer is always wrong - get 'em in, get their money, get them the fuck out... got it!!"

I loved that job - I'd make double and triple my wages on tips from the power washer.

See image above. 20” and 21” options are both XL rated (although a 107 load rating seems low - think the Disco needed 112.

This sounds exactly like Dover, they even still sell red diesel there. Lots of men in transits filling up containers for their tractors
