Do that in a car and you can get 14 years for dangerous driving. The same law doesn't apply to cyclists and the archaic "wanton or furious" offence* that can be applied instead only has a max 2 year sentence.

There's going to be a bit of a crack-down and why shouldn't there be ? In the early days of cycling cyclists fought extremely hard for bicycles to be recognised as vehicles (rather than some kind of novelty / toy) and to be allowed on the road. That brings a responsibility to observe the rules.

It's a lovely idea that cyclists could be allowed to ignore the rules if they feel like it but it relies on "people" applying common sense and courtesy when around other people. If "people" could be trusted to do that we wouldn't need the rules in the first place (not just on the road, I mean in life in general).

Offences against the Person Act 1861
Drivers of carriages injuring persons by furious driving.
Whosoever, having the charge of any carriage or vehicle, shall by wanton or furious driving or racing, or other wilful misconduct, or by wilful neglect, do or cause to be done any bodily harm to any person whatsoever, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the court, to be imprisoned for any term not exceeding two years,

In London it’s like the war on drugs, unless you station a police officer at every junction, every hour of every day, there’s no possible way they will ever curb the amount of red light jumping. A crackdown is completely pointless. I probably cross 50+ sets of traffic lights going into town and will usually see a cyclist jump the red on almost every one (if I don’t).

If they made crossings shared use, like many pedestrianised areas already are, then pedestrians would be more aware and it would be safer for everyone.

This is getting funnier. The casual pedestrian has more rights than car drivers or cyclists these days. Look at the turning left thing where you have to stop on the main road in your car causing an accident to let Joe Public cross the side road. There is no common sense Gav but there is the law. Going through red lights is a no no.

Not spotting a copper tho, maybe pop to the opticians ;)

Should probably get an illegally powerful e-bike kit. That way you won’t get sweaty, they won’t catch you and everyone seems to get away with it 😄

Well it's not hard to get away with it - just don't run red lights in front of PCSOs.

Yeah, good point Rich. At least it doesn’t mean points on your driving licence, unlike riding something which should be road registered without insurance, tax or registration.

yep, like exceeding the speed limit in a car. We all make our choices, so Gav really can't whine about getting caught when he takes his chances breaking laws in front of law enforcement.

They stepped out and blocked the cycle path, it was a hot day and I was on my way to a party so probably doing about 10mph to avoid arriving drenched in sweat. I’m always friendly and respectful to police and was obviously bang to rights, however, you’re right I could easily have carried on. As she was taking my details I was thinking “why tf did I even stop…” 😏

I know its the internet compared to real life, but I think I'd just swerve round them and shoot off, leaving them in my dust.

£50 though. What a racket. Although a red light is a red light...
Cheers,

Mike.

Thought you guys might be interested to see the context of this. I was cycling the same way so put my camera on to film the lights I ran. The PCSO (who wasn’t wearing hi viz) was standing roughly where the dude in black clothes is walking near the end, just before someone tries to run me over  And yes, I still go through red lights, so not looking for any sympathy
