When it came out they were included in the Best Handling cars of the year .....but they “fixed” them after that
Friend bought a sub 2k one in a nice dark blue and it’s pretty quick
I like the baseball leather seats too - usually I don’t give much of a stuff about the interior or a car
you can un-fix them pretty easily. Firstly remove the rear bumper and strip off the near 20kg of ballast and tow hook and do a proper geo.
Plus the early type front arms/bushes and arbs

There are still original spec cars around as it wasn’t a compulsory recall and some people were happy with their cars
'Enjoyed' Richard Porter's story about smashing one up on the Collecting Cars podcast 😬

Ours had the Sport suspension when we bought it and the same size BBS wheels. I believe it was only the springs though or just the dampers were knackered as it crashed about a bit.

I fitted Koni Sport suspension, h+r springs and did a few jobs here and there. New dump valve spring (re-circulating) , big service, tear brake callipers, Brembo discs and pads all round, all fluids changed, Haldez filter, earth strap etc etc. This one is tuned in some way but it only started out as a 180hp model. The engine is not characterful and lazy to respond, it goes ok though.

It isn’t an understeery mess, tucks I’m really well, reacts to throttle and lifting off but is a little slow to re-act and over-tyred. It can really go at some pace though and the brakes are excellent. The driving position feels low and the sensation of speed is very good plus it’s a small car.

It’s a little noisy and the gearing is too low, 3600rpm at 80mph in top but it’s quite fun on a run and in the wet it’s very sure footed. I’d be quicker in this than my 500e in the rain.

I’ve come to really enjoy it but I don’t think it’s a car I’d seek out, the engine just isn’t special at all.

I’ve just bought a 225 for £125, haven’t seen it yet :D

That is ridiculous

It's only ridiculous if we don't get some pics and a breakdown of how FUBAR it is.

Mind you, I expect it's modern enough in VAG terms (modularity) that anything horrifically broken could be sourced relatively cheaply (engine, gearbox, etc) assuming the chassis isn't bent, but old enough that getting the bits to work together would be half an hour on VAGCOM...

The popular mod to restore the steering sharpness is known as the ‘defcon’ mod, harder/different bushes from what I remember.

QS is desirable, but will be quite some time before it’s really desirable.
Yes, the original bushes had a lot less rubber squidge in them

The TT225 from last millennium was CAR magazine’s real world handling champion for 1999

Made the Autocar cut for their Handling Day as well

Hot on the heels of the Impreza Turbo and WRX STI V at EVOs 4wd test beating the Skylines and old stuff like the Quattro 20v and Integrale

Just shows how cars and opinions change in a couple of decades

Can't see them going down in value but are the running costs large?
I’m a fan of these. I think they look superb still and those Recaros would fit in my posh beetle very nicely.

I think the rear seat delete people pay a lot of money for as well, plus other small bits and pieces. I think V6 front bumpers are silly money as well.

One thing I did notice on the later 2006 cars is the tax is 555 quid.

I’ll give you £175. Cash waiting 8-)

I presume there’s some particular VAG bits you want off it?

Turbo gone. Lad bought a replacement turbo which is in the boot and the garage said it was the wrong one, I’ll spend 10 minutes later having a look at which turbo it is and what’s wrong with it.

I don’t really want any bits from it, the engine might come in useful as a spare for the Golf and the haldex could come in useful for another project but tbh it’ll probably end up being broken for parts.
