Non-original windscreen news

Post by Jobbo »

My leased Audi A6 Allroad cracked its windscreen spontaneously when it was only a couple of months old. No stone chip or anything like that. I paid the excess on my insurance and had it replaced, and everything was fine. Handed it back to the lease company with no queries.

Just over a year on, the new owner e-mailed me last week. He said he'd had trouble with the rain sensor so took it into Audi and they pointed out the non-original windscreen. They told him some story about new windscreens needing to be Audi's own, and calibrated (which is clearly rubbish because the Autoglass fitted windscreen was fine for the best part of 2 years in my care, and the rain sensor was one of the most reliable of any car I've owned - vastly better than the Volvo one which has never been great despite being as it left the factory.

Anyway, I think this just reinforces the need to put 'original windscreen' in your advert when selling a car. Thank me later.

I hope you reminded him that he didn’t buy a brand new car.

That's what I wondered. There was one service invoice addressed to me in the paperwork, so I guess he must have found out my name and address from that. It didn't have my personal e-mail address on, though. I've asked him so I'll find out, I hope.

Interesting Audi are getting a hump on about it when Autoglass are listed as an OEM approved supplier for the industry (I.e. they’re the go to people for prototype cars in the UK as well as production cars, I bet VAG have them as the default prototype windscreen repairer for UK based testing).

I’ve also since found out from other owners that Mustang windscreens are horrendously expensive due to having some sort of NVH properties in them. There’s a few owners who have claimed off their insurance for a new screen which has exceeded the maximum claim value and after the insurance contribution they’ve still been left with well over a grand bill. One of the top buying guide tips is to check the claim limits on windscreens when taking out insurance.

Apparently my email address was on the service invoice 😄

The Audi dealer are just giving him some rubbish to get out of a warranty claim, I think. But it’s his fight, not mine.
