Sod it, so I guess that's around £1500-£1800 all in? So you're £10k into the car. Still peanuts for a 996 really.

My opinion which you didn’t ask for but you’re getting anyway: This. Stick with it. You could go through a buy back, spend more on another car and given this is a common problem end up in the same situation 12 months down the line. I’ve done exactly the same on one of my cars and did t regret it because I every other car I went to look at had the exact same issue but was more money to swap.

Failing that, how much is a 'new' head (BTW, I think you're right to persevere with this car).
There’s 2 cracks. The large one from the spark plug hole, and a finer one from one of the core plugs.

£700 for a pressure tested, skimmed and cleaned up head. Plus all the labour, obvs, including swapping the valves over and lapped in.
Gonna get any improvements done at the same time, while the engine is out? I know the zorst is improved, but is it manifold back or cat back? Any intake tweeks worth doing while it's a 30min job to swap these bits over to get some more snorty snarly noises out of it?

Can the other head be checked easily/cheaply enough?

Exactly my thinking, plus what OC said. It’ll be fixed for less than £2k. On a car where a set of tyres is £750, it’s nothing really.

Performance exhausts don’t gain much (if anything) on these and they cost a fortune. The intake is already done (red cap mod).

It’s been inspected and has no cracks. Other than pressure testing, that’s pretty much all you can do. There’s no early signs or symptoms either. They’re fine until they’re not.

Reassuring enough. It'd fester away in the back of your mind if it hadn't been looked at.

If both heads have gone it’s still sub £12k for a 911 you don’t need to worry about. I guess the real question is when you take a punt on one at what point do you become unhappy with the time and cost spend?

Are you still going to fire an email over to the dealer? Ask for some contribution?

Aye, it's more the thought it'd play on your mind if you hadn't the other checked, the possible doubling up of labour etc. Preventative maintenance, that's the phrase I'm looking for. :)

Exactly. I know far too many people who will change one side, usually suspension or tyres, but only when it’s an MoT failure then pay again the following year for the other side despite everyone including the garage telling them to do both sides at once because it’s significantly cheaper. I don’t get people who carry overhead like that :? An engine on a performance car is something else though because it’s not so easily inspected and without taking the whole thing apart at great expense it’s a tricky thing to know if you’re going to have ongoing issues, I’d understand it if Rev said he wanted rid so soon and took his money back.

Head bought, going to collect it this afternoon. There’s a chance I’ll be back on the road next week, just in time to fuck off on holiday for 2 weeks.
