Anything better than a Yeti for the money?

Post by Simon »

Gonna be changing the wife's car before long. She's got my old Mondeo (mk4) but it's

a) huge
b) manual

and she's decided to learn automatic only. Probably sensible enough as I don't see a manual car in our future with way things are changing. So reqs are:

a) Smaller than Mondeo (think Golf/Focus size footprint)
b) Petrol (shorter journeys usually)
c) Auto
d) Aircon/Climate
e) She likes the higher driving position in my sister-in-law's CMax, but the only reasonable autos of those are diesel, apart from the very recent (and out of budget) late powershift/1.5 turbo combination, and the dry clutch powershift does not have a good reputation. So a higher driving position is preferable.

Budgeting around £6.5k. Don't want her and little'un in something old and unreliable.

New shape Qashqai is very good for what it is. But you'll need 10k+ to get one that fits your requirements. So maybe a Yeti is the best option.

Personally I’d be looking at a Tiguan over a Yeti just because it’s a nicer place to be and has a real engine. You’d have to have a diesel, though.

My sister had a 1.2 Petrol DSG Yeti and it went really well. As a family hack you'd never feel short on power.

I'm not a badge snob so didn't feel short changed in a Skoda, it had pretty much every toy my M2 has other than a big motor.

My bike has a 1.3 engine. I'm not driving a car that has a smaller engine than my bike ;)

We had a 2.0tdi Yeti and it was an awesome family wagon. My missus still talks about it fondly. Loads of room & removable seats. They drive superbly too.

Couldn't recommend highly enough for a family bus.

Yeah, Tig is nice but that budget only puts you in a diesel, and with the journeys she'd be doing it's completely the wrong engine choice. CX3 is lovely, but not in budget.

The Qashqai, even in budget, has some absolute horror stories of the petrol motor going pop even at low miles. I found it pretty firm riding too.

One of the hire cars I ended up with a few years ago in NZ was a Rav-4. I found it better in every way over a Qashqai, particularly the build quality. Dunno if they'll be in range of your budget though.

The Yeti drives like a small van with windows, whereas the Tiguan drives like the ‘new’ class of small SUV. Both are what ther are but the VW is better...

For what it’s worth..

I’d have a Yeti over a Tiguan all day. I really don’t get why people would buy a Tiguan.

This just isn't true. What are you basing this on?

Driving 2 Tiguan’s And 1 Yeti, 30,000 odd miles over a 3 year period.

2.0 Tdi’s in each case

OK well I can't argue with that!! :D I thought the one Yeti I drove was like a Golf that was wearing a top hat.

That's a cracking description 😀

Bizarre given Dinnys heritage but he doesn't seem familiar with the characteristics of a panel Van 😂

I’d get a Tiguan, you can lower them on mk5 coilovers.
