Whilst I 100% agree with you, it would definitely end up in divorce if I bought that.

In reality, She honestly wouldn’t care if I did buy something, unless it was hugely expensive or risked the mortgage.

So I spent some time watching the installation videos for the DSE suspension kit and I’ve decided to downgrade to QA1 suspension. There’s probably about $20k worth of welding wire required for the DSE mods

What was the running problem in the end? I missed it getting fixed.

I think I knocked the dizzy cap when cleaning the engine. Next time I went to start it the rotor hit the cap and broke. Guy turned up to buy it and it wouldn't start.

He went home, I investigated, found a broken rotor arm and bought a new one. It wouldn't start and when I investigated more I realised the cap was maybe damaged too. Someone recommended a local specialist to me and he lent me a complete new dizzy. I swapped it over, yet the oil pump drive was different so it wouldn't drive the dizzy. At this point I think it probably just needed a cap still... However, it had been attempted to start so much it was also flooded, plugs were fouled etc. I took them out and blow-lamped them and cleaned them etc but at this point the specialist offered to just take it away and sort it. I was really busy so agreed and towed it around to him. He proceeded to strip the fuelpump, rewire the coil, fit new leads, remove the carb and rebuild it, fit a new, different carb, swap the inlet manifold etc., etc and couldn't get it to run. I've no idea why he started doing so much stuff but obviously introduced loads of unnecessary complication and additional areas of potential problem.

After a few months I lost my temper with him, went and took the car off him and took it to someone else who'd been recommended. He was methodical, but was also well into his 80s and not very quick. I'm sure he'd have got it running as he was just sensibly working his way around it checking everything from the basics, compression, timing, ignition, fuel etc. I think he was proioibably near but it would be whole weeks inbetween him eg saying he was going to check the timing and actually doing it.

So on Xmas eve my Dad was over; he's a mechanic and worked at the Vauxhall main dealer when Vivas were new. We went over there and applied some logic and just re-timed it, set the carb up and tow-started it into life. Took about 20 mins total.

So TLDR, it probably needed a cap and rotor but got fucked about with by a clueless 'specialist' for months.
