James, I was joining in. You are perhaps taking this too seriously.

The answer to the question is 'it depends'. I suggested that Ian avoids a particular type of engine that is fitted to a high proportion of cars that he is looking at. I asked for more information about the car he looking at so I could provide a more detailed response. That's all.

Scotta scoffed at my suggestion to avoid a particular engine. It took a while to coax out some details but it turns out Scotta's experience was irrelevant afterall and that was it.

I think the safest thing to do is only buy new, sell after 12 months and accuse everyone else of being poor.

Used to drive an Octavia taxi that had 758k on it on original engine and box. Sure the trim rattled but the car drove fine.

The engine in my MK4 Golf is fine at 197,000+ miles. Just FYI.

And yet managed to deftly avoid divulging any information whatsoever. Class act.
At least I gave an example and I still got shit for it!
This place can be such a joy, can't it

You ARE the world's unluckiest car owner though, this is undisputed.
It's only the 2 but they don't half smart though. The Fabia was more honest that the truck as I had a bill for everything replaced on it ever, where the selective deletions of history on the Nav would have made me walk if I'd known, so probably why it was hidden.

Chains seemed like they were the answer to everyone's maintenance prayers but it seems that they make things worse...
The other thing with these engines is that VAG knew this was a problem and kept updating ECUs to widen the parameters to prevent engine check codes and consequently valves would get burnt out.

Just horrible engines that cause problems from 40k >

Upside down oil filter too IIRC
Jesus, The later Euro5 Navs have a shutdown procedure for Cam/Crank sensor timings, even Nissan knew not to mess with that as when they shutdown the bottom chain is usually not far off breaking and destroying the engine.

They made a great engine in the 2.0 16v Diesel though, our Grandis with that engine was utterly dependable.

Ah, so given we now have a VAG 1.2TSi on 39k and a VAG 1.4TSi on 21k, does that make my Renault on 59k my most reliable car?! :)

My mate bought his with 230k and sold it with 300k on the clock...

My V40 had 159k on the clock when electrics eventually killed it but the engine was still perfect

Yeah, owned it since new. Not that many miles per year, in reality.

Cut down on my mileage quite a bit over the past few years, due to my year off and commuting in by motorbike.

Fuck all up with that. Get it bought. He should be thankful it’s not a rusty Vauxhall Chevette.
