US spec e30 m3 has the standard BMW 5 speed shift pattern.

It wouldn't have had the m badge on the lever though

Yep - dogleg for the E30.

It looks like the M1 didn't have a shift knob with the gear pattern on it, although the pattern itself would match. So that's the maybe-3 as I can't decide if it counts or not

So just E28 and 1st-gen E34 M5.

Ah - not a dogleg? The normal 635CSi was.

Not all the 3.8s had 6 gears, so not strictly 1st gen only.

No, the run-out E34 M5s were the limited edition orinoco green/mint leather or rosso red/champagne leather. But the 6-sp box was introduced a year or so earlier along with the 18" wheels.

I'm pretty sure my mates E34 M5 3.8 had 17"s with a 6-cogger box.

Though his was an import from Germany

Probably had smaller alloys fitted for winter tyres or something - the M Registry confirms the 18" wheels and 6-sp box were introduced at the same time: https://bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=12

Gwaredd, the Japanese called the SJ a Jimny... that's what SJ stands for
I am fully aware of that, but I am fully aware that we're not Japanese and as a result, we Europeans called the early (and best IMO) versions, an SJ. Jeez, I'd forgotten how pedantic you were! ;)

Not my words. The words of Autocar magazine! ;)

In another thread, hasn't Simon said that his wife now wants a Grand Vitara but as it's for her it has to be a nice one and therefore he won't be able to take it off-road? - this thread would still be valid if so!

Yeah, but if he really loves his wife, surely he'd buy her a nice 320d?

I think there might have to be two Grand Vitaras, or a really fucking good wrap that withstands hawthorn hedge scratches
