Harry’s Garage
Re: Harry’s Garage
I'd assumed it had been ground up restored and that's where a chunk of the £££ came from
That one being such an early chassis number probably adds another chunk.
GG., that's not a swb, how much does that affect the price?

Re: Harry’s Garage
Yes, getting to the core of it, that’s basically what they’ve done with that Sports Purpose one - there is only one reason they used a LHD donor as a base and that’s because it would be too expensive to get a very early RHD version and tweak it. So really it is a 400k version of a sub 100k car unmodified.
Then again I guess you could say that of an Eagle E type or any of their ilk. None are really good value for money or a sensible thing to do to a much cheaper car. You’d be much better off with a 2.7 RS as an investment — it’ll be interesting to see whether these high end modded cars retain their value in years to come or depreciate once the shine has worn off.

Re: Harry’s Garage
Likely significantly more for a very early SWB so maybe calling it the 400k version of a 100k car is unfair but to me it’s somewhat perverse to take a SWB, where a chunk of the value is in the originality of having an early car that is the ‘Ur 911’ to then modify it to make it a ‘better’ car… as Porsche themselves did several years later. Why not just start with a LWB for less or use a RHD as a base for the same amount? I know what I’d do.
As you say, who knows the full background though - this car could originally have been a wreck and needed saving - in which case the originality is less of an issue. They probably wouldn’t publicise that though as it would come across more of a triggers broom I suppose.
ETA - this is a SWB and still sub -100k as it isn’t mint so clearly they can be had for reasonable money https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1279847
I really want one now!
Re: Harry’s Garage
I'd pick that over a 2.7RS personally.
IIRC Harry said it's insured for £400k, could it be that it cost less than the sum of its parts to do? That's probably what a punter would have to pay mind you.

Re: Harry’s Garage
It’s never worth £400k is it?
As said, £70-100k for a base car, £50k to fully restore and £50k for upgrades. £50k dealer margin for their efforts and you’re still only at £250k.
My former employer has done a few similar to this, and much the same to a couple of 356, and they’re great, but not at £400k.
I can believe £90k was spent in the engine, as high-end parts for these have silly prices, but I’m certain that you’d enjoy a £30k engine almost as much.
Singer have bucked the trend on value retention, but they are truly bespoke cars.
Eagle E types retain their value pretty well, but are almost impossible to sell on outside of Eagle or a couple of E type specialists.

Re: Harry’s Garage
No way is that a 400K car surely? Unless you're buying something like a Singer, I don't know where these values come from.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Harry’s Garage
But isn’t the value add from these that they have been rebuilt to your spec? (Like the seat in the one Harry had a stab at). You never get that money back but you convince yourself it’s worth it…GG. wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 11:14 pm Yes, getting to the core of it, that’s basically what they’ve done with that Sports Purpose one - there is only one reason they used a LHD donor as a base and that’s because it would be too expensive to get a very early RHD version and tweak it. Re: Harry’s Garage
Yeah, I can kind of see the appeal in a fully tailored to your requirements car, but can’t see the appeal of a secondhand one built especially for someone else at not much less money.
The Porsche is lovely, sound great and bet it’s brilliant fun to drive, but I’d still struggle at the total cost, and at £90k for a 200bhp 2.2l engine.

Re: Harry’s Garage
Were I in the position to spunk 400k on a car, I'd have no qualms whatsoever splashing 90k of it on that engine just for the sound alone. From memory Tuthill himself has said (on the Collecting Cars podcast?) that the 2ltr is by far the sweet spot revvy little buzzsaw bastard of an engine and would always be his choice and this 2.2 is just a subtle variation of that.integrale_evo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 1:28 am Yeah, I can kind of see the appeal in a fully tailored to your requirements car, but can’t see the appeal of a secondhand one built especially for someone else at not much less money.

Re: Harry’s Garage
I guess if you’re in the position to spend that sort of money on a car in the first place the numbers are fairly inconsequential anyway.

Re: Harry’s Garage
Rubber bumpers look wrong with those wheels - needs chrome. I suspect that's how it came from the factory mind you, but BL did some terrible things to Jag.
ETA: just looked at their site and that's a 1987 car, so it definitely wouldn't have had those wheels from the factory. Nicer than the pepperpots it probably came on though:

More rebuilding the Lancia, some enviable skills on display.

He makes the metal working look easy, but I'd expect that's 30-40 years experience doing the talking.
Wonder how many apprenticeships in just plain old metalworking/forming/shaping are taken up these days?

Retropower has a really young guy doing a lot of their metalwork now.
An absolute unit
Re: Harry’s Garage
Proper metalworking is really a form of witchcraft.
Re: Harry’s Garage
Harry seems quite excited about this. I had forgotten he had placed a deposit….
