I still think, if I was allowed to pick just one Porsche to keep forever it would be a 993 gt2

I didn’t realise they were only ever badged GT, I’m sure even when they were reviewed at the time they were know as GT2s :?

Yeah, if I couldn't have a 993 Turbo and either a 964 or 993 Carrera to ruin with an RWB kit, a 993 GT2 would do

When Harry was on about Porsche ‘hacksawing’ off the arches for the gt extensions I did wonder whether he’d seen any videos of an rwb kit being fitted 🤣

Difficult question! 993 GT is right up there. Didn’t realise they’re that rare.

For me it’s quite possibly the second best looking 911, behind the ‘73 RS.

Hmm. Maybe a heretical view but the bolt on arches are a bit Max Power for me. I'd take a 993 RS instead.

If we're discussing best looking 911s I think I'd go with a '74 3.0 RSR. Butcher looking than a '73 2.7 RS on account of the wide arches and with a slightly bigger motor. I expect the '73 is probably a nicer car to drive though.

ETA: Interesting article on the two - suggests the 3.0 is actually the better to drive:

Same, I presume I must have known at some point and the article Harry references was in my first copy of evo, certainly a memorable one. Seem to have forgotten it though over the years.

I still think I'd take a CGT if we're taking Porsche but the ultimate factory 911 for me. Probably take speccing a Singer over one as well though, but I guess that's a different question.

I liked how he said there was nothing in the cabin to identify it as a GT/GT2, other than the massive GT emblazoned on the rear carpeting 8-)

The Z8 shape has definitely grown on me over the years.

It's just nice to see a BMW in the media that isn't overwrought hideousness...

Black one used to park near where I was living in Germany years ago. Just a bit awkward all over.

Agree. I followed one around the east side of Lake Garda on a road trip a decade ago - they definitely look better in the flesh and the rear is also better resolved than the front IMO.

I’ve always liked the Z8, my favourite BMW Z car although that isn’t saying much.
How about not having a sig at all?

If they'd done a Z8M Breadvan I might agree with you.

There used to be one parked up the road from the main offices for Islington council, it looked pretty good to my eyes. It didn't look ~£90k good though. Surprisingly plain.

I’ve always thought they looked great, but never really wanted one because they were supposedly wobblier worse driving and more expensive than the m5 they shared running gear with.

I'm finding that increasingly with cars from that era - the 996 shape 911 I hated in the early 00s and now I really like it. Although I think in the Z8's case it has a certain timelessness to it (especially that rear) which didn't sit well with a brand new car at the time but now really works. Dynamically though, it seems like it isn't really all that...

I always loved the looks and interior of the Z8 so I'd put up with the dynamics, but it was LHD only and the values were driven up by Hexagon buying all the Z8s which they could and drip-feeding them to market at higher and higher prices. So there was a lot to dislike about the way they were sold.

I suppose there are worse donor cars than the donor car that shall not be named.
